drlindz There is no need to remove the engine.
Remove the transmission and then the flywheel/flexplate.The seal is a one piece.You can punch a small hole into each side of the seal and then thread small screws into the holes.This will give something to pry on to ease the removal.A large seal installer is recommended, but it can be done without it if you are CAREFUL.

This would be a good time to replace the front seal in the transmission.

badknuckles i agree. but there are alot of mods for ford 5.0 litres if you have that much money and you want a (burnout motor) i would put a mild cam in it if you dont have alot of miles

GearHead69 How many miles are on the engine?? If it's low and it doesn't show any sighs of wear like smoke, loss of power or burning oil if it checks out OK I would leave the internals alone. But if it does burn a little oil and have high miles I would do the basic rebuild of boring it, new bearings, pistons and rings. It does involve taking the engine out and it not the easiest job but not the hardest. Is this engine Fuel injected? I would start with good exhaust, headers and Flowmasters alone would give you 25+ HP Can't do too much in the performance department with fuel injected motors like you can with a carbed engine.

badknuckles first thing i would do is drop in a nice chevy 350
just alittle chevy humor i would replace all seals and gaskets while its out

Rear Main Seal

What do I have to do to change the rear main seal in my 1991 F-150 (302). Also if I have to pull the engine is there anything that I should do to it while it is out? (change any gaskets, clean anything) I want to fix up the truck so that It will burnout forever. What type of performance parts should I put in it. I am planning on putting app. $2500 into the truck
