Thom, sorry about any misrepresentation for what you needed. You know us Sailors, too much salt water in the brain. Have you checked on some of the later car engines, the Nova had the 250 in line 6 from 68 through 72 or so. They would come with a power glide and maybe even get the gears out the the rear end.
So't know the dimensions or length.

Hey, at my age I will take 2cents anyplace I can find it. Just dont expect to much change.
56 on Chevy got wise. Enlarged the engine compartment and began standard dimensions. Right now I am looking for a 261 at the yards. I have resorted to using my 6' frame clamp to verify that any of them fit inside the clearance. But good try and thanks for the thoughts.

|EBlack36||Get a 235 out of a car and not a truck. if I am not mistaken the truck motor used a bigger block which was also the basis for the 292 big six. Of course I could be full of it and not know what I am talking about too. Might check the length on the mid to late 60's 230 something and the 250 inline sixes. Just my 0.02 worth.|

Kinda get the same run around. Use a 235 etc. But 235 had various engine lenghts and only the early 54 fits. The one I have is from a 59 truck and it is too long by about 4 inches. Now I have to use the electric fans for cooling. Rather find some thing that fits. I dont mind changing motor mounts, that is easy with the old tourch.

Thom, I also have a 6 cyl with 3 on the tree in my wifes C10. I'm pretty sure the gearing in the rear end are installed for max torque for those tree stumps that needed moved (my truck was a real farm tool). I really want to leave the 6 in and change either the tanny or rear end gears.
A good 6 can get you the speed you want.

Wow You folks have made upgrading my 55 pickup a breeze. The junk yard + 600 provided the limited slip w/343. I am waiting on the man to finish my 383 roller, and I just changed out my 350 for a 700r4. CPP even sold me the upgrade to power brakes. It has been a breeze. Grand kids and I are having a ball.
Now...... WHAT ABOUT ME. My 52 210 running a pounder 216 has got to go. I like the 6 cyl and 3 on tree put would like to go faster on the freeway. Takes 4 hours to drive 200 miles. What 6 will change out with the 216 and fit? What rear end will change out? Is there a newer version of my tranny?
HELP ME PLEASE.
