|b/w72||this truck currently has a beat 305 in it that needs quick replacement. Thats why the cash is being spent on the engine first. I'll give reeds a call with my problem and see what they have to say. I'm sure no matter what i do the 350 going to be soooo much better than that rag 305.|

Gears are needed for sure. I would go to www.reedcams.com and get one of the Torque Monster series. I would suggest the 262/272 on a 110 with a 3 degree Advance. Mega stump pulling torque. Ask for Dennis if you call, he will take care of you.

If you want torque like you are talking about, you might want to consider a Pontiac 400. They are super torquey down low because they have a long connecting rod length. It is possible that you already have a dual pattern bellhousing, but if not there are adapters for Chevy pattern to Pontiac bellhousing bolt patterns.
I built a Chevy 400 for my '73 Camaro. It has extra torque that the 350 does not have (possibly another option for you). I was very close to buying a Pontiac 400 before I got my current engine. I mean really close. Out of all the engines I have played around with, they are the torquiest down low and the have the quickest 0 to 60 times. Of course all things being equal.
Another good thing about the Pontiac 400 is that you won't need to change much to make it how your are wanting it to be. I have seen them make cars slower by adding larger cams. If you build it with around 10:1 compression, and keep it basically stock it should get good mileage with more torque than you will get out of a 350 Chevy at the lower RPMs.

|streetk14||I would say put a 3.75" stroker crank in it. This will make a big difference in low end power. There are pretty inexpensive ones ou there. If you are already doing a rebuild, it won't cost you much more. You'll have to clearance the block a little to clear the stroke. Also like the other guys said, gearing makes a big difference too. If you decide to go with a 383 (which I would), this will help to overcome those short gears and big tires you have.|

|48fordnut||install gears and don't spend the other money. with a 33" tire your ratio is probably 2.70 . a better gear will make the diff.|

try a 383 or 400 or more, longer stroke more torque less rpm,
keep the rods long as possible. 112 degrees between centers on the cam with no more than 262 degrees of duration

sbc 350 build up questions
I'm getting ready to rebuild a 350 for my 78 k-10 w/ 3:07 gears and 33" tire truck. All I want from this motor is 50 million ft lb of torque by 1000 rpms . No seriously i want this thing to have mega low end grunt, and i don't care if it rolls over and goes to sleep after 4k rpms. the block will be bored 30 over I presently have 76cc heads with 1.94 intake valve. For this set up what would be a good cam selection for low end? My other thought is to go look in the pick and pull for another set of heads with perhaps 64cc chambers. So my other Question is what will the increase in compression ratio do for my quest. my heads are casting number 462624 someone told me they were crack prone has anyone had any experiance with them? Thanks to all in advance Ben
