302 engine heads
i have a 302 that i have spent a little over $2,000 on and i have done everthign and anything you can thinks of. everything is new, bored, or rebuilt. the onlything that i didnt get for it is the heads. well i rebuilt them but once i got the engine running the thing ran like crap. it only runs on 4 cylinders. i was wondering if the casting numbers on the heads are supposed to match up? the codes on mine do not. if you are looking at my engine from the front of the car, the right head seems like a 351 head. the rocker arms clap and there is about a 1/4 inch from the spring to the rocker arm. can any one help me?

If you do a 351w find a 69-74 block as they have a thicker webbing and can handle more HP, as a note the 74 block has a 9.5" deck height and the 69-73 has the 9.480". Both blocks will work but there will be a little difference in compression and the older blocks use a 8.150 pushrod and 73+ uses 8.205 is I remember it correctly.

|302truck||i have a 1986 ford f150 4x4 i jist did a 302 in it.im jist now geting the buges out of it but dang it will easilely set the truck sidewayes in 1 and 2 gear thates with 31s on it .more than i need.and every one on here had rilly good ides.call the manufactor for the best set ups.i wint with roush windsor lite 200 heads holley 600 .a comp cam good from 2000 to 5000 rpm.cran roller rockers.good luck have fun with it.|

|KULTULZ||I would prefer the 5.8L over the 302 as HP and torque will be easy to get to move the thing. Maybe find a later F4TE block asm (roller) and go through it. Sufficient head assemblies are available used (E7TE-GT 40) as rodders discard them for aluminum pieces. FI and you have a torque monster.|

Dont go with the 429 its so heavy and parts are expensive and hard to find.
The 351W makes an awsome small block for several reasons. Parts are easy to find as its in the same family as the 289-302 motors. A fresh 351w with a nice set of heads should put you in the 400-450hp range and still be 100% streetable. If its cubes that you want, the 351 can be stroked to 427ci, with 1/2 the weight of bigblock. Also all the small block aftermarket heads like AFR,DART,EDLEBROCK,TFS will bolt on a 351w. The 351w probably has the most potential as far as cost to hp out of all the ford motors. If your looking to do a cheaper build-up you can buy a 393 stroke crank from scat for about 350$ which uses stock 351rods and 302 pistons. Alot of options with this motor, you cant go wrong with the windsor motor.

All other things being equal, carbs make more power. As do cubic inches.
Boss 429? Sure....if your wallet can handle it and you actually find one for sale.
I'd go carbed 351W (or bigger).

|onebadmerc||If you are starting from the ground up on a motor, I would go with a 351 Windsor. It is easier to get more torque and HP than out of a 302, it has stronger block, better rods and it wouldn't be as hard on the engine with those extra cubes. Any pickup weighs a lot and I would go with a bigger engine than a 302, BTW I have a 390 in my 67 F250 and it pulls all day long without breaking a sweat.|

300 HP isn't an unreasonable goal. If I was looking to get 300 HP out of a carbed 302, here's what I'd do:
Edelbrock Performer RPM intake
GT40 aluminum cylinder heads
Crane 2031 cam
1 5/8" shorty headers
Hi-flow catback exhaust (Flowmaster, Dynomax, whatever you prefer)
Edelbrock/Holley carb (650 cfm)
In addition to those mods, I'd have the GT40s milled .060 to raise compression to 10:1.
However, to achieve the clearances needed, you'd probably have to replace your pistons with soemthing aftermarket.........and being that you can choose your compression ratio, milling the heads would be unnecessary. They'll probably need changed anyhow, if you're planning on using the GT40 heads. Most of the pre-1986 Ford 302s have big time clearance issues, even when attempting to use a stock 1987 E7TE head. Reason being, the older motors don't have the valve reliefs cut into the pistons.

|Thuggishruggish3000||well the engine is going to be put into an F150, but i want the truck manly for playing around, so what bolt- up mods can i do to the engine to make it more powerful, or should i put a 351W HO into it, i was also thing about maybe a 429 Boss, if i can find one,, i want at least 300HP, so really if i can get that out of a ford small block, that would be excellent.|

|lluciano77||It is easier to modify a carb to meet your needs. Especially a Holley. If you do your homework you can make fuel injection work better than a carb.|

Ford 302 Engine Question
Hi everyone, how are you?, i have a question about a 1980 Ford 302 Engine, Right now it is carburated, but i was wondering if it would be easier to modify that engine if it was Fuel Injection, i'am doing a full rebuild on it, and maybe put a supercharger or turbocharger on it in the future. but i just want to know what would be easier to modify, carb or injection?
