montea ok ther is the 3 wires coming from the distribitor body to the cap which are from front to back brown black and orange/peachy. and the tach wires i guess, 1 green on the front and black in the back, the car never came with a tach though. i hooked a test light up the the wires coming from the distribitor body and ther is nothing.

it seems like im missing wires to it but thers no where for them to go

with the ingtion to "on" ther is a light orange/peachy color wire right below the distribitor that has some power coming through it, it is a bit heavyer guage wire too. ther is no place to hook this up to though.

i swaped from a 82 SBC 267 2bbl carb to a 80 SBC 305 4bbl. they should be the same. i wish i had another car to comapre too, got a friends 80 monte on the drive way but he pulled the engine so im outa luck

1BAD80 Ditto with killerformula.
What color are the wires you have on the distributor rite now?
You can make a test-light with a light bulb holding the wires on the bulb, or use a old socket. I believe its a double wire with one brown on the left as you are looking at it and should be hot with the key on. The hot plug wire goes on the the one nearest the cap, and can only go on one way as they have alignment tabs on the connectors.
The other wire should be the tack if you have one.

killerformula make sure your 12 volt source to the distributor is giving you an honest 12 volts. DId you just hook the HEI up? Did you make sure the 12 volt source to your ignition isn't one that goes dead during the crank cycle of your motor?? I've seen it done before...

no spark?

ok i just was trying to start my SBC 305 enigne up today for the first time. its turning over fine but not starting up, its getting gas, oil pressure. my friend held the spark plug up to a ground and its not getting any spark. they are brand new spark plugs, wires were put on the engine a few months before tearing it apart. the distribitor cap was kind of crorded up on the inside terminal thingys.. changed the cap out and still noting... the distribitor is a HEI. There is the big 3 plug in on that goes on the side and also the other 2 plug thing with green wires.. on my wiring harness ther is a few other plugs but i have no idea where the hell they would go, or if they need to be put anywhere.

anyone have any ideas why i am not getting spark?
