My friend has a 93 Chevy full size Blazer w/ stock 350 engine and automatic tranny with stock 3.73 gears (no posi). 170,000 original miles. Recentley his truck wouldent move in any foward gears (but in reverse gears), he brought it to a mechanic and the mechanic said the rear gears need to be replaced. He paid 700 dollars to replace the gears. Same problem as before. Then the mechanic says he needs a tranny. and swap is $2300.

Could the rear end and the tranny both go out at the same time or is he getting screwed?

re:

my friend towed it to the shop with all four on the ground (tow straps). for about a mile he heard a clicking sound. is it possible that his tranny went out first and while it was getting towed it tried to engage or something and it caused the rear end to go out. is this just a greedy mechanic or a stupid one? or both? by the way ive never heard of a rear end going out. isnt it really hard to mess a rear end that is stock with an engine that has barely 200 hp?
