The headlights on my 72 SS El Camino shimmer (dim on and off..but not completely off) when I am idling. I did change the alternator to one with an internal voltage regulator and one that has 100 amps of power........but it still shimmers. How do I get it to stay constant?.....I am young to rodding but ready to learn!
unplug one of the lights when its doing it and put a test light in line between the plug and the neg side of the battery and see if the test light does the sam if not it is probally the ground circuit of the light s and if it does change intensity then you have a problem before the lights. also maybe put the test light on the bacl of the alt. and the ground side of battery maybe a problem there also make sure all conections are clean

Did you have this problem before you changed your alternator?
You might have a bad one. Also check your battery, it could be bad and putting a strain on the alternator at idle speeds.
I vote ground as well! But as said it could be internal to the alternator (grounding to case), if it did not do it with the other unit.
