i have a dilema. i am building a somewhat modified 350 sbc (and if you read the thread about 350s, i ain't building it cause its cheap, but that is a nice bonus). It has been bored .060 over, square decked, and an index grind on crank. it has forged flattop pistons, a 268 comp cam, 200cc dart iron eagle heads with 1.6 ratio roller rockers. i am probably going to be putting a weiand stealth intake on it, but my main concern is the carburator. im a bit of a dunce as far as my knowledge of carbs go and i want the right one. I know holley carbs are good but many say they need alot of tunning. edlebrock is good too but it seems like every 350 has 'em. and what about cfm. 600, 650, 700, 750? any info would help, thanks
holley carbs need no more tuning than any other carb and usually less, the problem comes from all those armchair experts that have no idea how to tune any carb to begin with. if you have an automatic trans and a mild street rear gear always use a vac secondary carb, a mild 350 is happy with a 600-650 if you insist on having a carb to brag about, use the 750-780 vac secondary carbs you won't get into trouble, though most people blame them for not opening etc it's usually the fact that it is too big for their combo so it is happy to run on the primary circuits the majority of the time. then they start screwing around with it till it's unusable. then its the carbs fault, i then buy them for$5.00-20.00 remove the screw they always put in the return arm. rebuild it with a kit, set it to proper specs and sell it to the next guy who loves it, if they don't touch it.
Hear here! I love those ones! I would really like to try a Demon mainly because it is basically a Holley clone...with some improvements. I love Holleys and I love getting them cheap, the newer Holleys now have the removable secondary housing so changes are a breeze. Keep a stock of bowl gaskets if your going to jet or fool around with it, o-rings too if it's vacuum secondary. Any carb you buy will work fine it really is a matter of preference, but lets face it nothing gets a man harder than a big ol Holley double pumper under the hood. Carter/Edelbrock is a good street carb too.
Call me Different, but I stick to Q-jets, i love the low end response they give from the small primaries, and the kick in the pants feeling when the huge secondary`s kick in. Many people don`t use Q-jets because they don`t understand them, they are a misunderstood carb, but means of working order, there very simple, just like any other carb. Lingenfelter won many championships running a Q-jet in his drag racing days, and I myself have had a lot of good service out of them, if your looking for different under the hood of a hot rod and something that`ll give you great throttle response and great mid to upper RPM power, a Q-jet will fill the bill nicely. Just my 2 cents.
Demon carburation now sells a road demon model in sizes from 600 to 750 for $289.00. On a 350 I would us the 600 cfm model just because the small venturies allow for better fuel atomization / better throttle response. DEMON carbs can be purchased through SUMMIT racing.
