I'm not sure why my car is a dog of the line.I'm guessing gearing.
It is a 68 Camaro that came with a 210hp 327 2barrel.Powerglide trans and one wheel wonder. The motor has been rebuilt but , not sure what came and things were used.I know it is .30 over cause I had the heads off and seen the pistons.I replaced the 2 barrel assy with a TPI unit from a 86 camaro and a painlees harness with stock ecm.
if your still using the power glide is one reason, it`s 1st gear is about equal to 2nd gear in a turbo 350. PG`s need low rear gears and lots of stall to get off the line with a heavy car. a 700R4 has a even lower first gear of around 3.08:1 which would be of benefit if you didn`t change rear gears. a 327 isn`t exactly a low end torque monster either, but it`s not too bad, the cheapest route would be to go with a TH350 and possible lower rear gears.
omg you're running a slushbox?! Yeah, get that thing out of there post-haste! Powerglides are worthless, don't let anybody tell you otherwise, because they're wrong . Seriously though man, they really have no business on a street ride. Your gears are ok, not great, but I would do the tranny first for sure and see where you stand. Most cars with even a stock motor benefit from a small stall converter as well, so I would look into that as long as you're dropping the tranny anyway.
I feel your pain man. Sell the powerglide, somebody will want it.
if there is a circle track around ther are always guys looking for power glides, but racers are used to sourcing parts from all over the place and geting whole cars for free or verey cheap so they may not be willing to pay a hole lot unless they are in need as they are getting harder to find .

I think the remark that powerglides are worthless is a bit vague. On the street I agree there are MUCH better options than the P glide of course. drag racers love Pglides...so, there not worthless
There are also a lot of addon options for your TPI unit. Ebay is a great place to hitup for these. TPI airfoil, throttle body spacer, larger TB, a chip for the ecm. You can also move the Manifold Air temp sensor closer to the front of the plenum so it detects a little colder denser air and richens the mixture a little. They also make large tube runners and Siamesed runners (though you lose a little torque on the bottom end with the siamesed) as well as intakes to match them. Get and adjustable Fuel regulator and mess around with the pressures.

Hey man. You can't beat those old powerglides for reliability! Those transmissions are super long life, they keep going and going ...and going.... and going......
I have the 2spd in my tempest and it's the definite problem for performance driving. Slow off the line, decent midrange around 30.... makes on ramps fun though, floor it from 10 mph and get 1 shift at about 35/40 mph
I have one .....only trouble is, I'm up here in Canada....tell you what, you make the effort to come up here and get it, and it's yours.........offer to maiors2 only................lol
maiors2,
My PG console floor shifter did not use a cable. There was a rod attached to the PG. My first swap on my 67 was a TH350. The tranny mount and cross member are re-usable. The drive shaft length was the correct. I got the shifter conversion kit (you can use your current shifter with the TH350) which had the 3speed detent plate. I bought it from: http://www.shiftworks.com since I wanted to keep the original look of the car.
The car felt a little faster after PG (1900-2100 torque converter). Then I installed the 3.73 (used to have 3.08) 10 bolt posi and felt a big difference. At this point the drive shaft needed to be shortened 1 inch.
If your shifter is steering column based, as they say: "your experiece may vary"
If you have questions, don't hesitate to shoot me an email.
Good luck - those Camaros, IMHO, are great looking vehicles and well worth the restoration.
