Engine oil cooler questions???

Any of you guys running a engine oil cooler please let me know what to expect.

Any oil pressure drop?
How much did it drop your idle and cruise oil temp?
Any other comments?

I have been thinking about getting some sort of oil cooler to keep the oil temp down but at the same time I dont want my oil too cool either.
I have a small eletric fan and relay that I may add to the cooler if its not enough.
Right now my engine oil temp gets around 230 and at times even 240 when on a long cruise but it goes right back down when at idle.

Runing one on my truck and would never think about removing it.

I bought a oil thermostat that mounts on the oil filter adapter and regulates the oil temp, It is set at 180 degrees of oil temp before it lets the cooler get the oil.

I have not noticed any drop in oil pressure and being that I tow through the desert here in So Cal. during the summer my oil pressure actually stays higher due to the cooler oil.

I bought a oil cooler at a place that sells VW parts as the price was cheaper then anyone else.

It is a 96 stacked plate cooler with 1/2" pipe fittings on the inlet and outlet.

You might want to check out some places that sell offroad equipment.

The unit that I bought is the EMPI 9267 good for a GVW of 25,000.

The cost I found it for on the net is $88.??. You may find it cheaper then that.

I run an oil cooler on the engine in my S-10. It has the thermostat built into the sandwich adapter. I have never run the engine without the cooler, but oil pressure seems okay with it. My block is tall grouted and I think that the cooler I have is really not large enough to correct the oil heat problem. After a couple power runs it was starting to drop a little more than I like. I would suggest making sure to get as large of a unit as you can. Mine uses 1/2 inch fittings, but the thermostat is just bymetal and I think it may restrict flow a little bit. I think there are some valve type stats and I would go that route if possible. I am probably going to change mine.

I ran an oil cooler on my last engine and planned to run it on my present one but, the oil pan kick outs are in the way. I can tell you my oil temp is about 40-50* hotter without the cooler than it was with the cooler. I also used a sandwich adapter (Perma-cool). I never had a problem with oil pressure with the cooler. I plan to re-install it as soon as I figure out where I want to mount my remote oil filter.

My oil temps without the cooler are about the same as yours. 230-250 range. In all honesty that is really not that hot for todays oils. I am with you though I would much rather have the temp. in the 210 range.

Edit: I just checked the sandwich adapter at the site (link) listed above. This is just what the Dr. ordered, it is about 1" shorter than my adapter and this will allow me to re-install my oil cooler in time for the summer heat. Thanks for the link.

thanks for the info guys...I was just looking to get my oil somewhere between 180-200 . no more or less.
I will let ya know how it all goes.

BTW what kinda hose where you guys running and how did ya keep it from the headers?

I am running Earl's brand of stainless braided hose with appropiate fittings.

My filter is up front so I don't have a issue with running beside or underneath the headers.

When and if you get that thermostat plate it may need a little porting. The one I bought had some little restrictions that were left from the casting process and I went in there with a dremel and cleaned it up.

I also used steel braided line and AN fittings. Since you have thesame car as me, what I did is run the hose throught the driver side frame mount (I had/have the cooler mounted up in front of the radiator on the driver side). Put the sandwich adapter on so the ports face forward, this will keep your lines away from the headers.
