Hi All,
Who would know where to find the VIN tag on a '65? I dont think they were up on the dash yet. I'm thinking firewall or door jamb. My brother has a line on a sweet '65 Comet and wants to verify the title to the tag.
Should be an inside fender tag if it's not at the dash yet. You can call the DMV and they'll get you in touch with an appraiser. I think he'll charge you little to investigate it, but if it doesn't have a tag, it might have had a salvaged title once.
I know its not a salvage car, it's been in our neighborhood long as i can remember. Just want to make sure the numbers match before plunking down the cash. He settled on a price of $400 for a factory 289 with air. Did some price searching on classic car trader online, lowest was $1800, highest was $17,000, average was $8500. Seem too good to be true, but i wasn't there when the deal was struck (maybe my brother has something on the guy lol?)
If you say it's been there forever, maybe they just don't know how to advertise and are getting desparate to get rid of it.
Does #'s matching really sway your decision? What would you do with it if you got it? I'd say for $400 it's a good deal as long as it's a rolling chasis with motor and trans. Doesn't have to run . . . . yet. That's just me. Sounds like a good deal to me.
If you want it, the DMV can figure out the VIN for you and get you a new title.
It should be on the lower driverside corner of the windshield. just like the newer cars do now....Car companies did it back in the early 60's.

I have a ton of old motor manuals all the way back to 1940s.
looked up the 1965 comet and heres what it says(its on the rear face of the left front door.
and it says that for the comet ,falcon.mustang, cougar etc
from 1964 to 1971.
Older ford products have the VIN tag on the drivers door near the latch,I had a 64 falcon and if I can remember correctly the VIN number is stamped on the drivers side inner fender close to the core support and possibly on the firewall also along with a tag on the door. My 65 country squire has a tag on the door and I think the VIN number stamped on the firewall too. Jeff
Well, It's in his back yard!!! I think i'm more excited than him. He got the complete car, a extra 302 motor, 298 Torker intake, 289 HIPO heads (no valves in them), speadbore carb, 8 302 pistons, all for $500. This thing is too clean to be a Michigan car. I'll put up some pictures when i can.
So excited.........
