wiretwister Just finished a 78 trans-am with the same problem.The pontiac manual has this procedure.Bring #1 cylinder to TDC then turn crank with socket or wrench until timing mark is at 0 on the tab. Point the rotor button between #1&#8 towers on the HEI distributor then drop it in. Hopefully you do have an HEI distributor. GOOD LUCK

305 timing

Hello everyone i need some moral support i have an 88 firebird with the 305 tbi im trying to get the timing in i put the engine at tdc. took the distributer cover off and the rotor was pointing towards the tbi not #1 so i pulled the dist. out turned the oil pump shaft to the desired location towards #1 now it well not start did i do anything wrong by turning oil pump shaft or do i need to set the spark plug wires back on cause of the differance on the rotor the reason why i was messing with the timing is that when the car is going 45 to 60 at a steady speed it would start hesitaing like if it was a stick shift when you pop the clutch to hard but well not do it when the engine is cold in the morning thanx for yall help really appreciate it
