port matching heads and intake

I am in the process of swapping the motor out in my 86 2wd suburban. Taking out the 350 and installing a 454. I pulled the 454 down for inspection and am planning on port matching the heads and intake. I have done mopar big blocks and no problems, but I am wondering how much meat I can take out of the head ports without getting too thin? I am using the intake gasket as my template and I will open the ports to match the gasket opening then gradually blend into the stock runner while removing any casting slag as I go. I am using an edelbrock performer intake on this motor. Any other trick mods I can do on my own? any thoughts on my proposed port matching?
thanks,
mark
