TurboS10 Well, it was 67 here yesterday. I ran my heater and 3 1000 watt halogen lights for a couple hours to get everything up to about 75. Got the base coat. Had a couple snafu's I had to sand out and recoat, but I am about ready to lay out the flames and clear today. It is suppose to be 75 today. I will send a pic or two when I get it done this afternoon.

tlambert Chris pray for good 70 degree weather that would be wonderful for painting.
Make sure to bring the temp. of the material up that you're using along with the metal on the car. Cold material & metal could mean problems.
Send some pics while you're doing it or when you've finished it.

TurboS10 I think I got it all. I just like to be sure when I go into something new, especially concerning paint. I think I will shoot the base tommorrow and let it dry over night. I will just dust the pearl over the base coat and do the clear like normal Saturday. I think I will be safer this way. It may seem trivial, but with the weather getting cold I have to plan my painting carefully. This weekend is going to be in the 70's so I gotta make use of the good weather since I have cant keep my shop over 70 when it gets real cold out and I am moving all the air through for painting.

Chris I'm sorry about the confusion about this he sanded the panels with a orbital palm sander w/800 then recleared. I hope I cleared it up with the above explanation.

tlambert Chris, I don't know the base you're using but if it's Chromabase you can recoat it within a 24 hr. period without sanding. If you nib sand it for imperfections you will have to recoat the color.

If you are using the V7500 clear it may be recoated during any stage of dry or cure. (I've never done that). If recoating after 24 hrs. scuff sand with 1200-1500.
On the S-10 I sprayed the base, applied 2 coats of clear, waited 24 hrs., then sanded it with 1000, touched up any cut throughs with color then applied 2 more coats of clear. It was a nice slick job. I beleive in spraying the first coat like you want the last to look, giving ample flash time between coats.

Depending on the clear you are using will depend on the # of coats required. Look uner the product section of their site, then the products you're using. As far as the rep. the one we have here is a good guy, he was a former painter in a cadilac dealership for years, he also helps out at the school with my classes during the school year and arranges the painting segment of the collision repair competition held each year.

TurboS10 Actually the data sheet on the site said that the clear coat could be recoated in a 24 HR period without scuffing. Are you saying this does not soud right? What exactly were you saying about on your s-10? Did you sand between coats?

As for application, I have found that a heavy first coat and two more light coats leaves a damned nice finish. If you get carried away after the first coat it tends to sag, so I just use light coats. Dupont recomends 3 medium coats, but I think the heavy,light,light works better.

As for my local Dupont Rep/Napa Paint mixer, I am not real confident in his information.

Thats true about the base color. The time could go a little longer. The rep. might tell you that but Dupont may not recommend it. Some of the other paint companies have a little longer times.

TurboS10 Well, after reading the technical data on the site you provided, I think have an answer to my question. Thanks for the help. Looks like I can recoat any time and no scuffing needed if it is under 24 hours.

TurboS10 I dont think that the lines will be a problem since I am using pearl and just dusting it on with clear.

tlambert It would be easier to apply the base color then lay out the flames, clear it with 2 coats, sand it with 1000 then clear with 2 more coats. Time between Clear coats

Guys,

I have another question. I am planning to finish the exterior of my s-10 this weekend. Wifes gone...weathers nice.

Anyway, I am debating on the method for applying the ghost flames. I am using urethane two stage. I would like to lay down the base and one coat of clear before the flames Friday, and then the pearl flames and two more clear coats on Saturday. I know there can be issues with trapped solvent when applying paint coats at strange intervals like this. Will one day between clear coats give me trouble? I am using Dupont Clear. If so I can put the flames directly over the base and then all the clear at once. Any suggestions would be greatly appriceiated. I really dont want to F this up. I am not looking forward to days of rework and $400 more in supplies.
