Has anyone used a Comp 8-412-8 cam in there SBC. I have a MSD distributor with the cam gear that they sent with it (steel) and I want to run it with the new Comp roller cam, but I don't want to ruin the cam with this MSD, HEI. I have called Comp twice and herd two answers one said to run it with the gear that came with the MSD and the other guy said to run the bronze one. I thought I would check for any experience with this cam and gear.

Thanks
Bob

There are three ways they make roller cams
1. Steel billet cams these are made for race only and need a bronze gear.
2. Steel billet with a press fit cast iron cam gear. Not all companies make a cam like this. It uses a standard distributor gear.
3. High quality cast iron core, uses a standard distributor gear. According to my Comp Cams catalog all cams in the 08-xxx-8 group are special material (cast iron) cams not requiring a bronze distributor gear. They are to be used in 87 and up blocks.

It looks like #3 is the answer. I can use the gear that came with the MSD HEI on this Comp Cam. The engine is a ZZ3 that I have freshened up with new rings and bearings, and a cam change for city driving with the A/C and the 104* heat in the desert. The stock ZZ3-- ZZ4 cam is just a little sluggish for daily driving and low RPM's, so that is why I went with the new Comp grind! I hope my selection of the new cam was a good one!!!!
Truck is still in the paint shop!!!!!!!!!!!
