SBC Vibration damper install question

I've gotten my crank vibration damper installed on my 383 chev but I don't know exactly how far to go. I've heard that you should install it until you have resistance but I've had some resistance putting it on from the beginning. I can't see if it's through the seal yet and I don't want to push it against the timing gear.

I was wondering if anyone out there has a measurement for proper fit from the front of the crank snout to the front of the damper. Right now I'm looking at 1" on mine. Or if anyone has any other tips as to how far to go it would be greatly appreciated.

thanks!

Dave

Put it all the way in, as far as it will go.

Ok. I cranked the damper on until the whole rotating assembly started to turn. I don't have an installer tool; because of past problems I've had to drill and tap the crank threads to 1/2". So I'm using a 1/2" bolt and washer. Should I stop here or is there a better way to make an install tool that will pull the damper on further. I'm afraid that my bolt/washer method will leave me with a broken bolt in the crank snout.

Set your water pump and crank pully in place and see how close you are.

I just went through this with my balancer. There should be an inch between the front of the crank snout and the front edge of the balancer when the balancer is seated. That should put your balancer against the crank gear.

Ok I've got the inch! Thank You!!! I actually found an installer tool that had the 1/2" threads and I broke the tool. Looks like the damper is all the way on. I'm just glad I didn't mess up the crank threads.

Well according to troy-curt "If you don't make mistakes, you're not doing anything." So it looks like I'm definitely doing something.

Thanks again everyone!
