|weirdbeard||I have always used Pennzoil in my old 86 beater Honda. I am about to give it a proper death by driving across the county until it dies or I drive it home. It is about to roll over 300K miles on the original engine. No smoke and still has pep. Maybe all the (sludge) is keeping it running!|

i have used 10/30 penzoil for years with no problems, if oil is not dirty at change time it is not doing the job. engine must operate at 170 min for the deturgents to work. i put200000on a f150 changed oil every 6000miles pulled a 5th wheel on vacation. no problems. used same oil on chev 1500 sam aplication no oilrelated problem . 1997 f150 with4.6 same deal. also heard that penzoil and quake state now same grp. never used synthetics so no coment . cliff

Has the new owner ship of Penzzoil by Shell had much of an effect of the quality of the Pennzoil oils in the USA?
I have heard of people here in Australia that have stoped using it once that all came out as Shell oils were said to froth up alot.
Hey just what I heard anyway.

|bullheimer||already answered the pennzoil Q but just want to let anyone who's read to the end of this post know that i went to napa and picked up some non detergent oil for my new engine. after i put in one quart i looked at the back of the container. it said "not for use in modern automobile engines". hahaha!|

modern oils have to pass certain spec and regulations in order to be sold by the manufactures. This is to insure the quality of the oil that is used, so most modern oils are pretty much the same.
I never had a problem with quaker state or pennzoil but I was told by my dad that he never used to run quaker state becuase the parafin in the oil used to sludge the racing motors. Supposedly this problem had to due with the fact that the oil was coming from Pennsylvania.
Also most oils are made by only a few big name companies, I know this since my dad worked for an oil company about 15 years ago. A lot of your off brands and gas station oils are made by large manufacutures and bottled and labled under specific names. These name brands actually change producers and actual oil companies depending on contract prices for the production of their products. So you may buy your brand name oil but if they don't produce it themselves you actually may be getting oil company A one time and oil company B another.

|willowbilly3||Back in the 80s I asked the guy who built our race car engines what was causing the sludge I was seeing. He said it was a combination of things. Number one he said he would almost guarantee the engine was running Penz, too long between changes and too cold of thermostat which didn't let the vapors and other oil pollutants to go out through the crankcase ventilation.|

Pennzoil and sludge
I seized a 455 Olds using Valvoline 10 w30 around 1980. I only use penzoil ever since. I never had a sludge or any oil problem since.

Pennzoil NO Good
I have much first hand experience with Pennzoil. I work at a national oil change facility. WE do about 50 cars a day, most which get pennzoil. Even after 3 thousand miles the oil comes out burnt. Pennzoil's level of protection to your motor is none. It has almost no resistance to thermal breakdown. The cars that run the hot, like the ford's for example, the oil is complete sludge. I can't even explain how terrible it is. DOes it sludge, with out a doubt.
