I used a combination of chem dip and carb cleaner when I rebuilt my Holley. Soaked the parts overnight and then used the carb cleaner to get all of the dip off of them; the solvent combined with the high pressure from the can does a good job of getting rid of the gunk that the dip loosened up, especially in all of the little passage ways. Followed afterward by compressed air.
And it's funny how those little passages just happen to turn around in the housing and come straight at your face sometimes... A little bit in the eyes won't do any permanent damage, but wow, does it sting!

I've recently used it to clean (vs the dip) when rebuilding a couple of Holleys. That "carb dip" is pricey and the nozzle on the carb cleaner spray can be used to direct the cleaner through small orifices to do a better job (or at least acceptable I think) when cleaning during dissassembly. It will freeze your hands though! It evaporates so fast that in cold weather (which it is here the last few days) if you bump your finger after getting the spray on your skin, you could end up with finger fragments! Anyway, since it does evaporate so fast, even if you get some in the manifold when the car is not running, it will be evaporated quickly.

|Huckster||Ahhhhh...now I know why my eyes were stinging everytime I cleaned my carb....would also explain why my carb never got cleaned. Hmmm turn the nozzle around the other way.|

I do it both. With and without the engine running.
If you get a bunch on the carb, just let the engine set a while. The cleaner will evaporate off so there won't be any problems getting the engine started after it has.

We used to do this all the time. You need the engine to be running though. Just spray the cleaner down the carb, and keep the throttle up a little so it doesn't stall. You'll get tons of white smoke out the pipes but not to worry it will clear in a minute. This method used to be considered the poor mans way to clean a carb.

|speedfreak2||That's what carb cleaner is for. Just spray it all over the carb-inside and out. You might want to open the throttle by hand just a little while spraying it down the throat so the engine doesn't die. By keeping things clean they last longer and function as it was intended to.|

Any problems spraying carb cleaner in my carb while its on the motor?
sorry for the stupid question...I was wondering if there is any problems spraying carb cleaner into my edelbrock carb while its on the moter?The motor purrs right now but there is alot of gunk in my carb.I dont want that gunk to affect my motor if I spray carb cleaner in there and it seeps down.Will all this junk just burn off after I clean it?thanks bm
