Ahh cut a big o'l hole in your hood and rumble around town!! LOL ok ok maby not! I have less 1.5 inches of room under my hood. My brother almost had to start chopping, but he put in a smaller air cleaner, and took out the padding under the hood. Have you considered adjusting your linkages ?? I am very interested to find out how your project works out! what size of carb spacer do you have ??

half a pound of industrial dynamite, or a quarter pound semtex or C4, placed atop your engine and detonated with the hood closed and duct-taped in place should give all the clearence you need..

My other and less unrealistic advive would be the K&N filter nitro junkie mentiones, or the edelbrock pro-flo filter (triangular gizmo) they are both only about 1 inch taller than the carb.

WEll here is what I would do... take an air cleaner, cut the thing so that you have the part that sits on the carb... cut some sheet metal and weld sides and a top on it (air tight, probably easiest to make a rectangal), then cut a small piece of pipe and a hole for it and weld it into your box (could use to pipes if you need more airflow) then run your tubing (like the fuel injects have) down the side out of the way to an air filter at the end... if you do a nice job of it, it won't look that bad and if you make it good and airtight you won't ruin your engine running it in sand...

An advantage to doing this is that you can place the opening to the system pretty much anywhere you want, like in the front, or the bottom of the car so that it draws in cold air instead of air that would be sitting under the hood warming up...

one thing you could do is find a throttle body air tube off of a chevy tahoe. where the tube connects to the throttle body is L shape for clearance. this setup can be modified for carb systems. at the end of the air tube you can angle it towards the front of the car and use a 88 camaro breather box. it t's off into 2 breathers and that could give you the option of using air induction. LET THAT ENGINE BREATH. lol.
