strikingthematch Anyone think the comp. cams 280 magnum Flat hyd. is a good cam for a 383?

Just wondering as far as all around Tq and HP go. I was thinking about going with the 280 just because that one seemed to fit just what I wanted to do but I just wondered what anyone had to say.

MI2600 I'm currently running an L-79 (.222@.050 w .447 lift) that I saw in a Lingenfelder 383 build-up. It's just not cutting it. I'm going to switch to an XE274.

I've found that the 383 is wound about tight at 6000. The XE274 is advertised at 1800 to 5600.

killerformula 284 comps roller with a proper carb will get you on the high side of 500 horse.

firestone If you wanted a hydraulic flat tappet cam, I would probably go with the 286H or the XE284H(this one would probably be a little better with vaccum) both with a set of 1.6 rockers. If you wanted a hydraulic roller, I would recommend the XR288HR or the 286HR. All of these cams would perform around 2200 6200 in a 383 like you are building. They are extimated to have a slightly higher powerband than that, but that is based off of a 350. With a 383, the powerband will drop around 300 RPM, and the vaccum will increase over a 350 due to the cubic inches. If you want to check out the specs on these cams, the site is posted below.

brainsboy If you plan on road trips the 4:10's with 26" tires may be a little low. For power the 650 seems small, but would do fine for road trips. As far as cams, Im sure you will get a few opinions, If its in your budget I would try something in a hydaulic roller, most are very streetable and make plenty of power.

Cam selection on a 383 build

Here is what I will have:

Holley 650DP
RPM Air gap intake
AFR 195cc heads milled to 64.1cc
Hooker 1 3/4" headers
Muncie M20 4sp
4:10 gears
26" tall tire
all in a 383.

Want to maintain enough vacuum for power brakes etc.....

Car is a weekend cruiser, sometimes take on trips. Want to get as much out of it as possible.

What is your recomendation?
