Early 3 speed Mopar stuff could last for a looong time. The engineers forgot that when they built the over drives and most of the FWD stuff they built.


I remember the early FWD Mopar mini vans coming in to the shop with the complaint " the speed-O stopped working"

The case area of the final drive was stretching out and the speed-O would quit. The needed repair : a new design case.

Ghetto Jet The fact that he ran up the mileage that fast suggests it's got alot of highway miles, which is easier on everything, making it last longer. I'm not really surprised it doesn't need rebuilt, now if it was a 87 truck with that many miles I would be surprised.

jimfulco A friend of mine has a '95 1/2-ton & he just had his 700R4 rebuilt at ~210,000. Seems it didn't want to back up any more.

adtkart 211000 miles on a stock GM trans? Sounds like a defect to me. He should take it to the dealer and demand that they "Fix it". LOL

Robinson Robin His regular trans fluid changes definetly have alot to do with it. Most of the world never gives their slushbox any attention until it starts to act up which is oftain to late.

tm454 PM is important in keeping the trans up and running properly with no break downs to contend with. And a little luck dons't hurt!! LOL

poncho62 Guess that it all depends on PM (Preventive Maintenance) and of course on how hard you beat on it. Some people are easier on equipment just be the way they drive.

Is this normal?

A good friend of mine stopped by 2 days ago to pick up some brake parts. We got to talking about his truck.

Its a '97 Chevy 3/4 ton 2 wheel drive. Its got the Vortec V8 small block and auto tranny. He's now got 211,000 miles on it and NEVER had the tranny rebuilt. He does the "filter and flush" every 20,000 at the speedy oil change place for $75.

Is this tranny that good? Or is he just lucky? What tranny would be in it?

He pulls a small but very heavy trailer for his construction work. Just wondered why its lasting this long. Seems every newer car we buy looses the tranny at about 65,000!
