drewhelm I recently had a similar problem.....also had a problem spending $85 for a sender from year one or performance years. I went to the local parts store and bought a universal GM sending unit....the one with no tubes. I removed the mechanicals and wiring from my original. I then took the mechanicals and wiring from the universal and transferred it over to the original sender. I clamped it in place, then spot welded the bracket on the back of the sender to the original bracket. Then I shaped the universal rod to the same shape as my original float rod and used my original float. $15 and 30 minutes of inginuity......Problem solved.
