2005 4L60E tranny

Worked on a 4L60E from a 2005 chevy truck with less than 100 miles today. A local company added a super charger to the truck for a dealer.


They tested the truck tooo hard before they delivered it back. They smoked the 2-4 band & drum , along with the 3/4 clutches. A common failure on stock 4L60E trannys behind supercharged LS1 motors in pickups , Avalanches, the Cadillac SUV's....

My point here is GM redesigned the front pump to case seal. It is now a press in lip seal on the main case. No square cut rubber seal in the pump body any longer.

The red color on case is the metal part of the new seal design. It is a stiff lip seal program similar to the style used on the filter to pump in the 4L60E trannys

I'll bet that seal was expensive. :eek: Or did it even need to be changed?
I doubt the seal is needed at low mileage like this..... I doubt it is availible yet too.

I am interested on how a new seal install will be handled in the after market.

this will also require the parts to be matching for case to pump

I know this is an old thread just reading about transmissions and noticed this one.the reason the seal changed is that the pump did too,along with the drum under it and i think the band too.all of these parts are avalible through transmission shops or supliers not advance or the others.I have built one of these too it had the same problems with just more miles.Funny how a super charger speeds up the life span of a trans huh.The fix for the 2-4 clutch is to build it with high energy frictions regular steels are ok.The band should be kevlar too.A no yo-yo valebody separator plate will help the aplication of the new frictions and band shifts start off little hard but feel firm later.These mods should be done along with a beafiersun shell,splines slip no reverse. :pain:

The reverse input drum is the same design, the band is the same too.

I never used kevlar materials if something else is made. Hi-energy material or the red Alto material works well for performance use.

There is no 2-4 clutch, perhaps you mean the 3-4 clutch pack(typo?).

Now...will22 ; just some friendly advice as a I am moderator on the HR board for several years... you need to type your posts with some spaces in them and a space out your thoughts in paragraphs..

2005 4l60e tranny

sorry about the typo CROSLEY your right 3-4 is the clutch pac. we have been doing these mods on a few over the past two years with no problems in the band area. how come you dont like kevlar just curious?i'm new to the board sory about confusion. :smash:

Kevlar bands come out of hard working units black or near black. The material seems too hard. The kevlar frictions for the drum clutch packs were the same way.

I build more than 200 of the 700/4l60 trans a year, most are performance units. The wide Alto red bands are used. You must have a nice flat drum for this band to function properly.

I've found that if you ask 5 trans people a question on something , you receive about 7 answers.
