Hey guys, I know a lot of you do pearl colors. At the NACE show here I went to see a friend that is with Sem.
They are launching a full custom color system
Its cheap, its simple and they have done their homework over the last two years and it is right.
Its ready to go to distribution now so you may want to ask the jobber to get you the color chips and info on it.
This is going to give House of color a run.

"Color Horizons" is the name of it.

I have to say, I have used a lot of SEM products and I am always pleased. If that is any indication, these custom paints will be no different.

i got one of the sem color horizions chip cards about a month ago. looks very nice. i did not know these were new products for them. i thought that all this stuff has been available for sometime now. it consists of 8 base colors and 14 candy color concentrates. they also have a few pearls and flakes. it seems that all the colors are very similar or identical to hok but i'm sure there is a $$$ difference. it seems that alot of companies are comming out with a custom color line but they all use the same dyes. it would be nice if there were actually some new colors that came out. i suppose that lightfastness really limits the # of colors that are available. the only thing new i have seen in a long time is the black candy from rm and alsa. i am definately going to give some of sem's stuff a try. thanks barry for the info.

hey barry....i just looked at my chip card and it says last revised 07/02. this is definately something new they have comming out??? maybe new colors or a different system??

Sorry Crazy Larry, I did not know that had one!
As you can see now that you have the link there are a lot more efficient people on here than me!

alot of the stuff is just like house of kolor's with dry pearls and flakes that you add to your clear as well as the candy concentrates. the only thing a little different that the base colors are in concentrated form also. you should be able to use all their stuff with your ppg line. i have used the flourescent pigment before and you just mix it into any clearcoat. worked great.

I have always made my own pearls and candies so not real sure how all the other procedures work.

But he showed me a panel taken to bare metal and one
covered with white epoxy and one with back epoxy than the pearl was mixed in the clear and two coats shot and than cleared with straight clear.
He also said you could tint a sealer and use as a base.

That was in the works for April 2005, to be honest.
But after going to this show there must have been at least
10 new companies introducing this stuff.
So April is now free.

Got to love the competition to hopefully bring some reasonable prices of paints to the market.

I'm with you Larry, cuts down on the $learning curve.

House of Color is an excellent line and they had the market wrapped up BUT these type of products are easy to make, just time consuming matching the color you want.
H of C has gotten out of hand on the pricing and now that opens the door for other companies to jump in.
Prices will go down as some of these companies will be ready to go under in six months, so they will start blowing out product and other companies will try to match the price to keep their sales.
Dutchman, you will get your wish.
A further note when these 10 companies realizes Sem jumped in
they will have a price decrease next week I'm sure.

Barry, how do you make your own pearls? are you meaning mixing them up per your own ratio, or what???

Yes, making your own colors, you can't make the Pearl powder in backyard.
Candies also you can make but its not cost effective so better off to buy the concentrate.
Do you want to know how to make colors or the Pearl itself?
If you do I will be happy to explain but keep in mind, we have a national bike show winner on here and Jim may know more than me.

as far as mixing and using the products i can give some good advice but actually manufacturing the products themselves if thats what we are talking about, is a whole other story. pearls are mica powder and some how it is colored to reflect a certain color light and the candies are made from dye rather than an actual pigment which makes them less lightfast. some color dyes are more lightfast than others so just purchasing any color dye just doesn't work. most colors available today for automotive use have been tested to last a long time in the sun without fading while i have seen other dyes sit in the sun for 2 hours and get totally bleached out so you couldn't tell it was there. i usually try and just stick with products that have been tested and work. there are plenty of suppliers out there now that have such an array of products (although most are the same) there is no need to tinker around with making your own stuff. that tends to just lead to problems down the road. let the paint companies do what they do. but just to expand our knowledge maybe barry would like to explain. hey barry....ever think about doing a one or two hour special on discovery.:)

I'd be afraid being a movie star someone like Julie Roberts would want my body! Than a messy divorce, etc.

Really, my luck it would be Oprah!
