|Jared||Which heads do you guys recomend for decent torque and high rpm. My camaro is running 2.41:1 gearing in the rear end. I currently have a TH350 tranny but am thinking of putting in a TH 700 R4. I could use the lower first two gears and .70:1 over drive. Does any one know any thing about what years are the best for 700 R4's? Ive herd they are weaker than the good old TH 350 but with the engine build I am doing I dont think I will hurt it, too bad.... I hope. If the parts list I am useing will help ask and I can list them. Thanks for all your helpful information.|

If I remember the 624 was an alternet for the 882 casting.There both known for cracking.
The 624s are better than the 305 heads in flow but are thin.If there not cracked and don't need allot of money use um.But if they need $300 worth of freshening can them and find a better set.
993s are a good 76cc head that can be found cheap.There supposed to be the most common 350 head and I don't think most people know there any good.
If you got flat top pistons you should be at 9:1 with a 76cc head just use the thin gaskets and maybe mill the head decks.

462624 are junk. Very thin casting, possibly the least desirable SBC head.
I have a set of them lying around if it makes you feel any better

According to Mortec, the 14022601 heads are 1.84"/1.5" with 58cc chambers.

I'd assume the 624 heads flow more air. Has your block been decked? If not, have it decked so that the pistons are 0.025"-0.030" below deck height, and use a 0.015" shim-style gasket. This should give you close to 9:1 with the 76cc heads. And port dem sum*****es.

|Jared||Alright I went and checked out my heads, The "350" heads have 1 15/16 in intake. ( Sorry no caliper around.) and the "305" heads have 1.7- in intake. The casting #'s are 14022601 "305" and the "350" # was 462624. I found 3 listings of the 14022601 # one is out due to 1.3 exhaust valves and one dosent have valve size at all. The third has no cc. the 462624 is a 350/400 head w/ 1.94 int. and 1.5 exh. so that site says. if any one knows more plese help me out. also any one know any thing about the block casting #? Greg is right about the valves. You need to measure them like Greg said, but I would use a dial caliper.
Also, 305 usually comes with around a 60cc head. If you really have 64cc chambers and 1.94 valves, it is not a 305 head.
What is the casting number (the whole number, not just the last 3) on these heads?

Well I would rather know are your new pistons flat tops, dished or have a small dome?
There is no 305 that came with a 1.94 intake they always used either 1.72 or 1.84 also there are several different chamber sizes for 305 heads.
The 350 could have 1.72 or 1.94 or 2.02 intake valves so if you compared them and theyre the same you have 1.72 intakes. Better get a small ruler and measure them, also casting numbers will help too. Let us know what you find.

I am rebuilding a 1975 350 engine and I have 2 sets of heads to choose from. I am putting in 9.3:1 comp. forged pistons. The block is bored .030. The pistons are rated 9.3:1 at .030 with 64 cc heads. I have 76cc heads off another 350 (77-79 casting # on the block is 14013679 I dont know what this is out of as there is no vin # in the ussual spot and the internet has been useless up to here. It is a 4 bolt main. If you know about this # can you help me here too?) and I have 64 cc heads off a 1980 305. Both have 1.94 intake valves and 1.5 in exhaust valves. What set should I use on this engine. This will be going in my 1979 camaro and I want all the power i can get out of the engine. All my head figures are off a web site and may be inaccuarate. I will post the head #'s as soon as i can read them off the heads. I know the valves are the same size on both heads as Ive compared the two. I have been told to use the 350 heads and I cant figure out why.I figure that if the ratio is 9.3 with 64cc heads it will be lower with 76 and id like at least 9:1 comp. If any other info is needed ask, I will be more than willing to find out. I would really appreciate some help on this as it seems im the only one in favor of the smaller chamber heads.
