That is a interesting article and has been out for a few years now. That website is an excellent resource on oil and oil related products. You wll see in there a lot of data that HIGHLY supports the use of synthetics in almost all lubrication applications. There are also a "few" additive packages out there that are worthwhile.

I'm not saying that synthetics aren't good and probably superior to petroleum lubes. It has just been my experience that the cheaper petroleum lubes will get you to the quarter million mile mark for MUCH less money IF you are diligent about your maintenance schedule. And most of us trade cars way before there is any lube related problem so I just don't see the economic justification for the extra mu-la. Sure if you have a specialty vehicle, you need specialty products to support it but for the vast majority of us unwashed masses, that is simply wasted money. I had a friend who would use nothing but Unocal premium fuel in his car since it is so superior in it's detergent formulation, etc. He is one of the best engineers I know, super smart so I have zero doubt that he is 100% correct in his assessment of the fuel. However, I am more practical and frugal and I get the same gas mileage and my engines go 'til I and the next owner sell the car and my ARCO unleaded costs $0.50/gallon less than his super fuel. That money gives me several more trips to Harbor Freight every year!!
