Hi I have a set of wire wheel 20's I am wanting to paint but have a few questions. Instead of scuffing the rims each spoke at a time im wanting to sandblast them. I was wondering if there is some type of masking I can use to mask of the chrome I dont want sandblasted. Does anyone know of something I might be able to try to use as masking that the sandblaster wont penetrate? Is there a sandblasting media that will scuff metal but wont cut through the tape or masking? Just curious.

Thanks,
Chris

hi chris,

yes there is. if you goto www.beacongraphics.com they carry sandblasting stencil. its actually a thick vinyl that goes in a vinyl plotter to cut graphics with. its usually used for making sandblasted wood signs. its sticky on one side and you can cut it to whatever shape or size you want. only problem is smallest roll is comes in is 15" wide and 10 yards long and runs $61 but i think thats a small price to pay instead of sitting there prepping each one of those spokes.....what a nightmare!!

Not sure WHAT your going to be blasting with or where it's done.
If I understand ya right,Your wanting to paint the spoke's and cover the rim?
Duct tape with regular masking on top or probly just double masking would be fine for a glass bead or other media in a cabinet at say,40-50#. You don't need excessive PSI for a paint scratch.
Now if your taking it to a sandblaster,That would be a different case unless you know what method they are going to use.

Use a couple of layers of duct tape. You can get it for a couple of bucks a roll. We use that at work all the time for blasting in an in dustrial cabinet. If you take it to a regular blaster that is using a huge outdoor compressor and a blasting hose the size of a firehose then you may want to triple the tape.
