Where to work on car?!?

Hi ho, my friends. Here's my situation. I'm a poor college student, living with my parents, who wants to build a hotrod. Problem is, we live in a subdivision and our 3-car garage is stuffed with 3 cars, a motorcycle, and tons of junk. Now, I'm looking to get a car to build plus a donor car for parts. All of my relatives that live within any reasonable distance either don't have space or have barns full of junk, too. So...does anyone have any bright ideas about where I could work on this thing for and "extended" amount of time? Thanks!!!

See if you can find a pole barn to rent that's what I did. You can get quite a bit of space fairly cheap depending on where you live.

Do you remember, or have you seen the movie "Christine"? The guy in that finds a space to rent at a salvage yard, you might want to look there too.

I said I live with my folks. They certainly aren't helping me out with this. If you're going to be an ***, I am going to have to ask you to leave :boxing:

When I was in my younger years living in Toronto we didn't have a garage so I had to work on the front lawn. During the winter I always rented a garage to store my car.

Nowadays I have a garage that will hold 3 cars and a pile of tools to keep me happy

If you skip the donar car, then you only have 1/2 the storage problem. You didn't say what kind of car your going to build, but the parts may be available separately.

As far as a place to work on it - it sounds like you parent's house might not be an option, and in most states, if a car is parked on a street, it needs to be licensed and legal, or you can keep a cover on it. If you can't find a barn/garage to keep it, then the street might be your only option. Then again, if the neighborhood has civic assosiation rules, even that might not work.

Don't take this the wrong way, but you might want to consider moving out with the money for the car first and build something later. But definitely have the car started before you get married!

Quite a few years back I was car poor with a one car garage. 4 cars and a boat. My neighbor was an elderly woman with a garage full of junk. I worked out a deal with her to clean the garage and organize it to store my boat. Storage fee was I kept her grass cut and hedges trimmed.
Worked good for two years until her grandson decided to restore a VW and got me kicked out. Funny thing is he got it apart and never put it back together. Just left it in the garage in pieces.

So, the moral here is check around you, you might find a similar situation.

We have a two car garage that the cars can't fit in and have 4 cars in the driveway (single lane) and a truck on the way. One of the cars is a parts car but it has a cover over it so you couldn't really tell but someone saw it with the cover off so we were busted so we have to get it moved. point is if you can hide them you can get away with it for a little while

Let's look at what you have and what you need. You don't have space, you don't have a lot of funds and,if you are a full time college student, you don't have a lot of time during the school year-or you shouldn't if you are doing it right.

On the other hand, you are no doubt young ,enthusiastic and willing. You will need a space you can work on your car, spread things out and take your time, without spending half of the time you have setting up or traveling to a far off site. I think 428ho has the right idea. Look around your neighborhood, check out some nearby industrial areas and check out some farms. If I recall, Carmel is outside of Indy, so you should be able to find all of these possibilities.

More than likely you can find someone single or elderly who would trade you space for the efforts of a strong back/weak mind to help around the place. Otherwise, look for something empty and cheap. My dad found a garage for his '65 Mustang 1/2 a block away from his house in south Jersey for $25 a month. The people just wanted something in the building.

Word to the wise-wherever you end up,get your own insurance-on the car,on the tools, and some sort of personal injury coverage in case someone is injured by your stuff even if they shouldn't be in there. You won't be covered as a renter by the owner's policies.
