Yeah, I hear you on getting a day-to-day car, but I like rolling in my 64. It's beautiful, it is fun to work on, it fits all my stuff. I like the 289 idea.

The 289 would be almost the same cubes as the 4.6 and the 4.6 has fewer moving parts, so lower over head and it also has efi so I might even get more out of the 4.6 and less weight.

The more I think about it, with a smaller engine I'm probebly gonna want to reduce the gearing on my tranny too. I suppose I could swap out the whole thing, but would it be better to just swap out the rear differentail? Actually, the tranny could use some work as well.

the 4.6 is a v8 though..... but it's small enough that just seeing the displacement you'd think it was a six.... why not just get a junkyard 352?

64 Galaxie engine swap

I would recommend going with the 302, for several reasons. The 302 is the same block as the 289, so external dimensions are the same. 302 are a lot more plentiful, so you wont pay as much for a 302 as you would for a 289.
You didnt state what kind of transmission you have in your Galaxie. Knowing this will aid in the engine swap, as the FE block and SBF do not share common bellhousings or engine mounts.
On the 302, get a 66 or later engine with the 6 bolt bellhousing, rather than the 65 and earlier which have a 5 bolt bellhousing, making some swaping stuff a little more difficult.
If your car has an FMX type transmission, that is an automatic with an aluminum bellhousing and tailshaft and steel center section, all that will be require for swapping in a 302 to that transmission, is to go to the junkyard and get a small block bell housing. Since the 64's did come out with the small block, all you will need are the small block engine mounts to bolt in your 302. You might also consider swapping in another FE block, and save yourself a lot of parts hunting. The 390 was made from 61 through 74, and were found in everything from cars to trucks.
They all use the same bellhousings, motor mounts, etc. Another option would be to drop in a 360 FE, which was used only in pickup trucks, from about 68-74, but would also be a bolt in job to replace the 390, as the 360 and 390 are the same block. The 360 never gained much popularity so if you find one in good running condition, should be pretty reasonably priced. 360's in a proper state of tune werent too bad on gas, either. My Step Dad had one in a 74 F-250 with 4WD and after I would tune it for him, it would get 15-16 mpg on the hiway. Not bad for a truck with deep gears.
From your posting, I am presuming this is not going to be a permanent swap, but just an engine to use til you get the 390 refurbished. The 360, could save you a lot of money in the long run, as everything on your 390 will bolt right to the 360, including the ignition system, intake, exhaust, water pump, oil pan, and the accessories.

The 460 is NOT fuel efficient.......
The Chevrolet 6 is NOT a easy swap.......
Enough juice.........

I suggest a 289 or a 302.........the 289 came in a 64 Ford so it can bolt in.
BUT a better idea is to get a cheap, fuel mileage car and fix the 390 as time and money permit......

Engine Swap - 64 Galaxie

I've got a 1964 Ford Galaxie Country Sedan with a 390.

The car is pretty much stock. The 390 needs to be rebuilt. I'd like to take the 390 out and take my time with it, but I need to keep my car on the road... so I'm thinking of getting a rebuilt engine to swap in for a while.

Since I'm in New York City and there are very few opportunities to really let the car rip and gas prices seem to be marching higher and higher and I'm goinging beef up my stock 390 anyway, I was thinking that it'd be great to find a small efficient engine to swap in. I was thinking about the milage maker 6 which was the original small engine option, but then again since this is going to be a sort of odd swap I figured I'd open the field up a bit. I've heard great things about the chevy straight six from the sixties. Newer engines are also an option. The 460 that is in all the Ford taxi cabs seems to be a good solid engine and since it is the fleet engine I'd figure there are a lot around and easy to get parts for.

What should I stick in here? Priorites are...

1) Enough juice to get the old girl around town and on the highway safely.
2) Easy to swap in and out with my stock tranny
3) Fuel efficient.
