jimfulco Novas have leaf springs & the rear ends won't fit, although internal parts from the pre-89 8.5's can generally be interchanged. A '68-'72 A-body rear end should be a bolt-in, but not all of those had 8.5's. I think Malibus finally got the 8.5 in '72, maybe earlier but I'm not sure. Look at the photo of the 8.5 & notice the heavy triangular protrusions at 5:00 & 7:00. Sometimes these protrusions look like somebody drilled a big old hole in it so there's just a partial projection left.

Here's a site with some ID info, & a couple of rear ends to avoid:

You may need a "conversion" U-joint & a slightly shorter driveshaft.

Stupido1 i am pretty sure that all 70-74 novas have 8.5 10 bolt rear ends. And there are tons of those.

what car should i look at for a 8.5 10 bolt

hello, i found out that in my 68 chevelle malibu i have an 8.2 10 bolt and for my application it just wont due, i was told the best thing to do was to find a junker 8.5 10 bolt and a posi unit, i need to know what cars would be ideal, preferable that would fit into my chevelle without mods, ( coil over) not leafs. i think i will go to the junk yard and try and track this stuff down but im not sure what cars to look at for a 8.5 10 bolt, without or preffereable with posi so i dont need to buy it. Thanks alot, Marc
