Supercharging a 340cc

Ok so I have this 1971 Sachs engine (german engines that used to come in Arctic Car snowmobiles) that's running strong. Its a 340cc. I have no current use for this engine so I thought I'll have a little fun with it. Heres my twisted idea: get an AC compressor from a 70's-80's Ford that was pulley driven. Hook up the primary clutch pulley to the compressor. So now whenever the engine is running the compressor is going strong. Run a line from the AC output to the engine air intake. I guess I'll need a little hole in the line somewhere in case the engine isnt taking in enough air. There should still be enough pressure to BLOW air into the engine.
Is this gonna work or is the whole thing gonna explode in my face?

Make a mini bike or go-kart out of it. I had a mini bike with a hopped up briggs and stratton 5 hp motor that did 57 mph in the quarter mile. It was a blast, I had it out on the Bonneville salt flats too. the grest thing about it was that I could pick it up and put it in the back of a truck, one time I hung it off the back of a stion wagon form the luggage rack. It probably weighed around 100 lbs. You can get all the pieces you need form Northern Tool. Or make your own frame, it would haul with a 340 two stroke. You'll need the snowmibile clutch too.

I would think that if you could calculate the displacement of the A/C compressor, then based on the pulley/belt ratios, you could figure out what level of boost you'd be running. May have to experiment to get it right - it is possible to overboost an engine.

Another possibility might be to temporarily run the compressor off an electric motor. That way you could play around with the ratios between the compressor and the engine RPM. Once you had them where you wanted them, you could select the proper ratio pulleys to direct-drive the compressor. Wouldn't get you exactly there (since the compressor's load would affect things) but it would be easier than blindly choosing pulleys.

Well I think it'll try it, the worst that can happen is that I overboost it and....well I dont know what would happen then, but I'll just shut of the engine once things get too wild.
And by the way, it WAS on my go-kart, but I blew the centrifugal clutch up after 2 minutes (silly me, thought I could run 32hp on a small centrifugal clutch to move a full rollcage heavy go-kart :rolleyes: ). I still have the kart and once the engine is supercharged I might get a primary/seconday clutch setup and try it again.

I'm guessing this is a twin cylinder? (had an old sled with a single, it was a beast!) would a smog pump work any better, push more air or anything? maybe you could try an old compressor head. Sounds like a fun project, use what you have and stand far away! lol i've had a few B&S powered projects go up in flames :thumbup:
