|ap0001||I bought a tach/dwell meter. I don't think it was helping that my dwell angle was 15 deg. off. I set the dwell angle to 30 deg and I got the timing to settle down @ 6 deg btdc. I can get it to idle @ 800 rpm, but about 5 - 10 seconds later the rpm slowly drops and the car dies. <img src="graemlins/evil.gif" border="0" alt="[evil]" /> I'm thinking that all arrows are pointing to vaccum leak either @ the carb or intake man. The float should be correct, the carb is brand new. I did plug the vaccum adv. and the timing still does the same thing. I think the problem is narrowed down pretty much to incorrect vaccum routing, float level, or vaccum leak. I tightened the intake manifold down according to the book instructions (order of tightening bolts) so that is why I am hesitant to believe that it's a vaccum leak. Is there anything else i'm leaving out?

If you are trying to set your timing with the vacuum advance connected; your timing will be retarded and can cause the engine to stall. Disconnect the vacuum line to the vacuum advance and plug it. Then set your timing. After the timing is set adjust your carb and then re-connect the vacuum line.

72 CHEVELLE...350SMALL BLOCK...4BRL ROCHESTER CARB ...CAM--224 DURATION ON INTAKE AND EXHAUST 465 LIFT ON IN. AND EXH. 114 LOBE SEP.
THE CARB IS BRAND NEW AND IT WILL CRANK UP JUST FINE BUT AFTER A COUPLE OF MINUTES THE CARB WILL MAKE A SPEWING SOUND ( NOTHING COMES OUT OF THE CARB ) AND THE CAR WILL GO DEAD. I ALSO NOTICE WHEN I REV UP THE CAR, A LITTLE GAS WILL SHOOT OUT OF THE BACK FLAPS OF THE CARB. I CHECKED AND DOUBLE CHECKED THE SPARK PLUG WIRING, SO I KNOW THAT IS NOT IT. I CAN EVEN GET IT TO IDLE @ HIGH RPM W/O GOING DEAD. BUT WHEN I GET THE TIMING CLOSE TO WHERE IT IS SUPPOSE TO BE, THAT'S WHEN IT SLOWLY GOES DESD. SORRY ABOUT THE ALL CAPS, I PROMISE I'M NOT YELLING. I REMEMBER YOU GUYS PICKING ON SOMEONE ELSE ABOUT THAT BUT I'M TOO FAR INTO IT TO GO BACK NOW.
