It had a 160 t-stat in it and with no fans running it would take entirely too long to warm up during the winter, sometimes I could see the temp needle drop just before staging. That was the reason for the lean-out valve/vacuum leak. During the summer the pits and return road are usually too crowded to even bother. I have no patience.
One thing I forgot to mention. If you plan on letting the car sit for a few weeks it's a good idea to drain the alchohol and dump some gas in the tank. Run it until you smell the gas and shut it off. That way the alcohol doesn't eat up your seals as fast.

|johnsongrass1||He's saying creating a controlled vacuum leak to lean the mixture to help build heat. Running a thermostat is a much easier way. As taping off the rad. or just break it in with gas and then bolt on your alky carb.|

|bullheimer||i usually stay away from stuff i know absolutely nothing about, but in this case i know absolutely more than nothing about "plumbing a ball valve into the plenum chamber" what? i just gotta know what in the HELL are you talking about? i am so lost, it aint even funny.|

No special oil needed for break in. I'd add a quart of GM EOS (engine oil supplement) just to help the parts wear together slowly and evenly.
I've only had one alchohol burner and I just leaned the mixture at idle to get it warmed up. If you tried gasoline it would probably foul the plugs quickly, if it would even start with the mixture being so rich.
Plumb a ball valve into the plenum chamber and open it a little when you fire it up so it'll get the oil up to temp. Then hammer it.

questions about alcohol engines
I've got a few questions about running alcohol in an engine. The engine is all setup for alcohol and was wondering if you have to use special motor oil and when breaking the engine in and when getting it hot enough to let all the seals set up should you run gasoline so the engine can warm up enough so that the seals seal up properly.
