You COULD put on the PI heads on the pre-99 engines, but youd have a higher compression ratio and would have to use the 99 and later intake manifold. The pre 99 engines had flat top pistons and larger comb. chambers, and 99 and laters have dished pistons and smaller combustion chambers. You add PI heads to flat top pistons and you get a big compression ratio.
Although you might run into small problems such as EGR fitment and dipstick location and what not, the parts will all still fit with each other...given you use the same kind of intake as the heads. Its much the same as building a 302 and trying to decide which water pump to use, or serpentine or v-belt. They all fit, its just a matter of matching your parts correctly.
True, its not as perfect as it sounded on paper, but even ford says the modular engine family was created "so they could share similar production tooling and have many interchangeable parts."

The 2002 Explorer had the same block as the cobra. They are both aluminum. The 02 explorer was the ONLY year the aluminum block was put in that vehicle. I typed my original post very wrong and made it seem like the exploder and the cobra share identical engines. I know what I was thinking, but my fingers were typing something different.
I have an explorer engine sitting at the moment, waiting to replace the old 4.6 thats in my bird.
And as far as parts being interchangable, if that was the case, then it wouldn't be a problem to swap out the heads on my existing 95 block to the newer 99+ PI (Performance Improved) heads to gain a few extra foot pounds of torque, but, you run into problems with various items not fitting such as the EGR tube, tranny dipstick tube, wiring harness, intake manifold, etc...
The big ticket items with these tbirds at the moment is to either spend the money and do the head swap, or drop in a 99+ GT engine with the ready to go PI heads and cams. But, then you have to modify the motor mounts to make the block fit in the crossmember. (I can show you pictures of how much you have to cut)
So much for the "modular" idea that everything is a direct swap and will fit.

THe 4.6 originated in the mark VIII and lincoln town cars. In the town cars it was the sohc version, in the mark VIII it was the dohc. THe 5.4 and 4.6 has much the same realtionship as the 302 and 351. All the same parts fit, but the 5.4 has a taller deck height and longer stroke..but the same bore. You CAN interchange all the heads from all the blocks wether it be 4.6, 5.4, sohc or dohc.
The 4.6 in the explorer IS NOT the same engine in the cobra. The cobra is an aluminum block dohc engine, the explorer has an iron block sohc engine.
5.4s are found in f-series, expeditions, and excursions and are all the sohc variety. the only place you can find a dohc 5.4 is in a lincoln navigator. In fact, the dohc 5.4 found in the cobra r uses modified navigator heads. This engine made 385hp and torque. THe lightning uses a sohc supercharged engine with an iron block and makes 385hp and 450tq.
The GT-40 engine is a 5.4 dohc engine with aluminum block and heads and a supercharger. It is PLENTY capable of making 500hp and 500tq...in fact, im positive if you slap on aftermarket goodies itll make even more.

It's been in Ford trucks and vans since almost the same time the 4.6 was installed in cars.The one they are using in the GT40 is basically the same one in the new(er) Cobra R.

It's The next step up in Fords line of Modular engines. The 4.6 is the most prevalent engine at the moment, but Ford is pushing the bigger engine to become the "standard".
It is capable of that rated HP with some help.
Fords plans to go with the modular engine setup looked really good on paper, but, isn't working out to well in the real world. For example, the 4.6 has two block versions, the romeo and the windsor. Different castings in different factories, not to mention there are at least 12 versions of 4.6 heads out there, and not all of them are simple bolt-on swaps. So much for the modular idea, right?
Pound for pound though, I'd rather have the 02 Explorer engine. Even though it's the 4.6, it IS the same 6 bolt aluminum engine that comes in the cobra, just the cams are set to de-tune it. Very nice building block for a late model engine.

Ford 5.4 in the GT40
Hey...can anybody tell me where the heck this Ford engine came from? I've been reading a bit about the new GT, and it seems from nowhere this thing is going to get 500 horses. I don't think I ever heard about this motor and was wondering about its origin?
