How do you determine the gear ratio of a rear end if you are not able to take the rear-end apart.

If the origional assembly tag is still there, by the code (FORD). If it is an origional rear in the origional car, a door code will tell you (FORD).

If you have neither of the above, raise the rear axle off the ground and turn the wheel(s) by hand. Notice the number of revolutions of the rear flange (u-joint) as compared to one full turn of the wheel. This will give you a close idea of the ratio (i.e. if the rear flange turns three times as the wheel turns one full revolution, you have a 3.00 to 1 ratio).

Also while turning the wheel, if both wheels turn in the same direction, you have a locking rear. If the wheels turn opposite directions, then you have a open rear.

Thank you for the info, that was my problem I didn't have the tag on the rear end, I will try the idea of turning the wheels. I will try to find the parts you are inquiring about, I have a friend that has a lot of old ford parts.
Thanks again "Railrodder'" :)
