rrmccabe Your timing is just too far advanced. Retard the timing just until it stops pinging and you will be OK

Torx yep, i was 180 off, flipped the rotor around, resnug eerything and ts running..
just need someone to fine tune it because its pinging when i mash the gas or try to speed up

other than that, its starting and cutting off wonderfully.

is that the case of why its pinging lightly?
you think by me test driving it or driving it at all will damage the engine real bad?
cuz i need to drive it to a shop close by and let someone tweak it...

rrmccabe TDC is at the very top.

Keep in mind you have a 50/50 chance finding it like you are doing. This is a 4 stroke and the piston is at top twice and you need to have it on the right one. Both valves should be closed on cylinder #1 when you are at real TDC on Fire.

You are probably 180 off.

V6 Timing Issues and TDC, misc questions..

I just got done replacing the timing chain cover gasket, oil pan gasket and misc gaskets on my Regal's V6..

Now, i had to take out the distributor and the only thing i marked was the base of the distributor to the engine block nothing else..

First time i installed the distributor it was seated properly and therefore didnt connect to the oil pump stem.. My ******* didnt realize it and i cranked teh car for a few seconds (the car turned over and ran fine but was making a bad sound and little smoke) So i knew somthing was up, tore it down and found that out..

So i refound TDC using a screwdriver, watching it go up and down...
Question: Is top dead center when the piston is at the VERY top, or when its about to BE at the very top?

I ended up refinding TDC, reseating the dist, etc.. pointed to plug 1.
It wouldnt catch a spark and run, just kept building up fuel in the carb and causing little carb backfire. I tried turning the dist assembly a little left and right but it still wouldnt catch and run...

So now i got it torn down again, waiting on a good idea and what i should do..
