valve quality?

I've got a future 468 BBC going together and have been collecting the parts I need for some time, Eagle 4340 crank, SRP pistons, Eagle 4340 H-beam rods, nicely ported 049 heads setup with roller springs, arp studs, 2.19/1.88 valves. RPM airgap intake, holley 950HP, and a bigshot plate system.

I'm still debating whether to run a solid roller cam or just a solid flat tappet.

The valves I had installed were Eaton stainless take-outs from Competition Products, I guess these come stock in some of the marine 502's. Now I'm second guessing myself and wondering if these valves will hold up to the spring pressures a solid roller spring provides, I think the spring pressures were 200lbs on the seat and 500ish over the nose depending.

Is anyone here running the Eaton valves? Anything I should be worried about? Bob

First ? is how come only 2.19 intakes and 1.88 exhausts? If its a roller, that means it will be around .725 lift and at least 288 @.050. If it was me, id put in 2.30 and 1.90. 1 thing when building a roller is i guarantee that the valves will be at least.200 long for the installed spring height as its either 2.00 or 2.100. The spring pressures will be around 240 and 750 open. the roller will be easier on valve train stuff, but it has to have stout pieces. Look at what the s/c guys are using on a 468 and you will see what i mean. Some guys have probs with eagle stuff, some dont. the last 555 i built, the crank(eagle 4340) and 3d rods were perfect.1 thing is go for all the comp you can as it makes the engine more consistent pass to pass.Save the take out valves for your street engine. Get some Manley pro flos or a gd Ferrara valve. Give Robert a call at Howards Cams 920-233-5228. Its a subsidary of Comp Products so he can get you what you need. And go for K-motion springs also like the 1000Hs

I agree, get some good valves, locks and retainers. The last thing you want is to trash a $5000 engine with a $1 part. But I think you valve size will be Ok for 500-550 Hp. As far as the solid flat vs the solid roller it depends on how many miles you intend to drive it a year. If it is over 1000 I would suggest the flat tappet, under 1000 a year the roller is the only way to go if the $$$ is not a problem.

nicely ported 049 heads
These are large oval port heads not the big square ports (990`s or 188`s) so I dont think the 2.30/1.90`s will be much of a gain Vs the cost of the change... Also if the open pressures are in the 500lb range those valves will work fine... The stock LS7 valves work fine even up to 700lbs spring pressure I know I have used them before... One other note the 049`s will need for sure to have the guides machined to accept over .550-.575 lift as they come with very tall guides unless you have changed them to something different...? Spring pockets are another concern as the exhaust will be most likely deep (they used rotators) but the intakes will need machine work as the stock setup height is 1.880 on those...

Many things to consider when using the large oval ports as opposed to the square ports... ;) This is the real reason for the valve train issues with BBC`s... Homework is a must on these...

valves

The 049 oval port heads with the 2.19/1.88 valves are a perfect combo for the big block chevy....

Those valves will probably be ok but i did not see exactly what cam you wrere planning on running with your combo...

I have used some of the off brand valves with roller cam engines i have built with no issues at all,, Just make sure you have the correct spring pressures....

The cam isn't selected yet but I'm sure it'll be 240-250ish duration @ .050 with .600-.630ish lift. The guide and spring seat work has already been done with spring spacers. I'll probably go with the Isky Redzone roller lifters with the extra oiling-this is a street car.

Any more input on the Eaton valves is appreciated.
