I am currently collecting parts etc. for our '27 T Roadster project. Being a light 'Rod I have stumbled upon an 8" Rearend,Housing only ,NO AXLES or Brakes etc.,(plus a 3.00 gear centre). The housing measures 52 3/4" wide. What I would like to know is its overall width Axle to Axle or Drum to Drum. Also, any idea what it might be out of from my very sketchy info.. I need something arround 56" O/A width.
The owner has had it for many years and can't remember what it came out of. As I'm not too familiar with Ford stuff, I thought I would come to the Experts !!!.
What I do know is that these Rear Ends when supplied in Australian Built cars (1967-1970 Ford Falcons and Fairlanes) were arround the 58-59" wide(Drum to Drum). But I don't have one to measure the Housing width.
Hi Barry, don't know if this will help but I got this link a while back.

It seems to me that on a 9" the axle standoff that all of the popular brake kits use is 2 1/2". Axle stand off is the distance the axle sticks out of the housing. So if you add 5" to your width that gets you close. Maybe someone else can tell you if 8 and 9 inches are the same in this respect. Good luck.
Thanks for your inputs,dmorris1200 & juxtoposed.
Yes I agree that 2 1/2" standoff would be arround the mark. This would bring the measurement up to 57 3/4 which is getting too wide for this project.
I'll keep looking, there's a swapmeet coming later this month, you just never know what you will find.
I thought that they might be, the new 7.5 and 8.8 ust the ssame axles and backing plates but I did'nt know aboput the older stuff. Good to know. thanks.
Yea I was surprised myself. I swapped over the backing plates with brake hardware and axles. You can see a pic of the operation in my photo album. I left the backing plates hanging while I swapped over the housing. The 9-inch I got was also out of a mustang same as mine which helped cause I didn't have to modify anything.
Barry, I measured a 8" in my back yard and it measures about 52 1/2" from axle flange to axle flange. it came out of a '65 mustang. (it could have even been 52 3/4" seeing I was measuring it in the dark while trying to hold the tape and flash light at the same)
Pretty good there lamothe1, if you check the link I posted a few posts back you'll see it should be 52 inches for the 65-66 mustang. At 52 1/2 you were just about on the money. We all should be able to measure that good with a flashlight.
Thanks for all the info.. I appreciate the help, especially crawling under cars to get the measurements !!!. I have checked out the link and it has answered a lot of questions.
Cheers...........Barry.
