Jon Yes, a single good post could outweigh 1,000 mediocre posts.

Nevertheless, as on *overall/generall/rough* indicator, to be used when analyzing the community as a *whole*, I think the post count is worthwhile.

Posts in the Intro forum are *indirectly* crucial to the site. Greeting someone when they show up opens the door for them to contribute knowledge over the long term. Thus, while the Intro posts aren't *specifically* technical, they contribute to the technical environment over the long term.

Good. Now there's no incentive for those who think the post count is significant to fill up threads with junk just to gather their little medals.

The post count doesn't indicate contributions. I've tried to avoid posting just noise. Most of mine have been questions. Even if you consider those as indirectly contributing by way of the responses (some of which have been excellent), I would still not be surprised to find as little as 10% of my posts have been actually useful to anyone but me.

You can look through any long thread in any of the technical forums and find lots of posts, by people with varying post counts, that contribute nothing technical. "Woo hoo!" and thumbup and "no no no" are not, strictly speaking, "solid hotrodding knowledge", even though there are times when such posts do contribute to the conversation by way of encouragement or discouragement of the one to which they were made in reply.

A very low post count can be viewed as an explanation of why someone has posted in the wrong place or manner. A very high post count does not necessarily mean someone is a god of hotrodding. A high post count could very well mean nothing more than the person spends too much time looking for excuses to post just to get that count.

The post count is a number which does not even represent the number of posts the person has made. Not counting those in the Lounge could very well be a disincentive to post noise in there by those who seek to increase their count. Conversely, counting the posts in the technical forums can encourage "post whores" to scatter clutter in those.

The post count is not very significant at all, in my opinion. Even if it were used to count only posts in certain areas and posts with a certain number of words or characters, it would still not reflect the quality of the posts counted. The content of each individual post is what matters. Over time, regulars will get a feel for who knows what and how much weight to give their words in various areas, regardless of post count, age or political opinions.

crazygutgut I dont wanna be a complainer, because I certainly am not obsessed with my post count. But it has been mentioned that one can easily "post whore" in the Introductions forum. and in my opinon saying "hi and welcome" should not be the easy way to get your count up. (yes I did that to get my count to 25 so I could view the dump)
The introduction thread is a sub forum of this. And I think the hot rod forum is a legit way to contribute, especially if people are posting photos or answering Pshop requests

Either way I dont care, I accepted the fact that lounge posts dont count AGES ago when you turned them off all those years ago!! but there it is

Jon I think, unlike many other boards, our post count here is a good overall/general/inexact-but-still-pretty-useful estimate of each member's ability to contribute solid hotrodding knowledge to a group discussion.

While the argument could certainly be made that posts in the Hot Rod Art forum deserve to count towards overall post count, I've made the decision to keep the post count based on posts in our technical automotive discussion forums.

The same decision remains intact for the Hotrodders' Lounge. While the Lounge is now completely focused on non-technical automotive discussion, I still think it's reasonable to base post count points on where they really count -- in the tech forums.

If we start to see some high-end posts in the Lounge, now that we've altered it, or in the Hot Rod Art forum, then we can certainly adjust this in the future. Posts in these forums could count towards overall post count, or they could count as 1/2 posts, or they could constitute a separate non-tech post count, etc. But for now, I think the best move is to keep our post counts based on tech posts.

grouch Wow! A whole big roomy new forum for the arts and already got the old threads moved in like comfy, familiar chairs! Yer spoilin' us, Jon!

Now we just gotta get people to tow their projects in here to get them airbrushed, chopped, channeled, lowered, sectioned, wheeled and radicalized. Let the experts in the techy forums figure out how to make 'em real.
