matt167 upgrade to disc brakes, poly bushings, get a sway bar if you can find 1 that will fit, and you will probably do it for less than the 1,300.

1951 Ford leadsled- questions about suspension

I just bought a 1951 Ford sedan.

Body work is all done, the rear frame is all fabricated of 2x4 stock and the body is sitting on it. Airbags are on all 4 corners. 8" Ford Maverick rear end.

The front suspension is stock besides the airbags. The guy that sold it to me runs his own hotrod shop. He has a Mustang II front suspension crossmember (with full suspension, rack, and brakes) that he will sell me and install for $1300 out the door. It will definitely need to have some parts replaced on it. Obviously, this will probably change the ride height in the front. If I went this route, I would probably put the airbags back in the M-II suspension.

I've also read on another forum that "Mustang II suspension conversions need frame rails that are relatively straight (at the mounting point), the right distance apart and and at the right height. Shoe box Fords kick up and out. The only craftsman like solution is a stub frame." Any truth to this? The guy says he can weld it in properly no problem - he has a frame jig.

Now, I want to let everyone know that I am fairly new to these cars and am not all that familiar with the potential modifications. What sort of upgrades could I do to the stock front suspension for $1300? What, at minimum, would I want to upgrade in the stock front end to give a decent ride quality? Basically the car is going to be a cruiser. I also am on a budget, but I don't want to do a half-*** job either. Any suggestions?
