I am back in to painting after 25 yrs. lots of new stuff[whew].
I have a problem with my base lifting by the primer halos like the old days when you shot laquer paint over un-hardened enamels,Is it the laquer primer?Should I use this as a filler buildup or should I just stick with a more expensive 2k type [epoxy?]primer w/hardner? Can I use laquer first then seal it with 2k? I'm painting a ppg deltron bc/cc and the sanding scratches show up using the laquer primer and wet sanding to paint with 400-600 I have lots of ? but this is the first round. Thanx for the input, I wish we had these type of q & a forums when I 1st started!!!

This is very confusing.
Your buying top dollar products but trying to use lacquer primer underneath?
This don't fit the normal mold as people that like the lacquer want to use the $30 a gallon paint also.

You should not be using lacquer primer at all and also to answer your question you cannot totally seal out the effects of a lacquer primer by sealing it.

Your asking for problems all the way through the paint job and well after your done with the paint job.

First off....Welcome to the board. I think you will enjoy your time here. There is a ton of info available here from some very knowledgeable people.

As for the primer. Old habits are hird to break. The lacquer was easy to use and relatively cheap. As Barry said, it will cause you problems with the BC/CC paints. Depending on how much of a hurry you are in, I would suggest you go with the primer from PPG or, as my choice would be, get one of the primers offered by SPI. Their information is available at... http://www.southernpolyurethanes.com/ or they may have a jobber in your area that carries their product. Their products are top notch and the owner is very helpful. If you have any questions about their products, I am sure that Barry would be more than happy to answer them, since he owns the company.

Since you will need to remove the lacquer primer, you will have some time. It wouldn't take long at all, if you need to order it, and have it shipped. There are many on this board that can verify the quality of their product.

Since I have been made aware of the SPI and the epoxy primers i use this exclusively in my shop..

Not to say I am super painter but this stuff works and makes my life much easier..

I do a lot of metal fab and priming with the epoxy works very well as even if the part lays around for a long while before final paint I can..or the body guy can just scuff it and lay his base down and carry on..

I do not expect that Barry or SPI planned on using the 6600 series primer in exactly this way but it does work just fine and has eliminated a lot of product from inventory..

Old Dogs, New Tricks

Would you put a billet crank and titanium rods in a 2 block that was'nt sonic checked or lined bored? Of course not. Good advise gentlemen!! I've been doing this for 25+ years and it was a bit hard for me to change over to catalized primers and urathane paints, but once you get use to it makes life a whole bunch easier!! I helped my friend with his custom vette that he has been working on since the late 70s, he had everything from featherfill, numerous different laquer primers, and who knows whatever else throughout the years. I told him the only salavation is to put 2 heavy coats of DP primer and continue on. Well it is painted today and it looks suprizingly awsome. There are a couple of spots that are noticable to both of us, with the question;" What do you think this is from"? Be gratful, you are lucky the whole car didn't blow up! The urethane paints, clears, and reducers are much stronger than laquers and will penetrate pretty deep, and will cause some very sad results! For all you DIYers out there, spend the dough reh me on 2 part primers and good quality urethanes, you'le be glad you did!!
