There are a few different plates for 6 bolt bell housings, I've a couple various ones on hand, as long as you match it to the tranny before you install it you shouldn't have a problem. I think they changed them when they came out with the 351,but can't recall, it may just be the different trans (FMX,C4 or C6).

|hotrodjoe||Hi. I have an early c-4 trans in my 26 T with a 300 HP 289. It works good with a shift kit. However, my car is lite,(2200 lbs) The 260 used a small (5 bolt) bell housing, while the 351 uses a larger (6 bolt) bell housing. I learned this thru experience, trying to do what you are. |waltmail||I can't tell by your letter if you will be using just the transmission from the 64 Fairlane or the Fairlane is the car you will be " hotrodding " . The bellhousing you have is a valuable commodity in that it is rare. If you posted to the TFFN forum @ <a href="http://firstname.lastname@example.org" target="_blank">email@example.com</a> , you will find plenty of offers for thast bellhousing or someone who will do a 6 bolt swap. That '64 C4 is a "green dot" shift pattern cruise-o-matic. It has a really wierd shift pattern to it and not conducive to " hot rodding " . If you find a 66-69 c4 valve body and swap it in, then your " green dot " cruise-o-matic will act just like the later model c4. I have rebuilt a few of the c4s and find them reliable and easy to work on. In stock setup, they will handle about 300 HP. Much more than that and they will need some beefing up. They can be built to handle over 400 HP. I've got to go now as this site is trying to send me viruses as I am writing. Thanks to Norton AV, they are being quarantined. Sorry.|

As Long as your stock engine dosen't have the five bolt pattern it should work with the stock spacer plate and flex plate. If you don't have a six bolt block like the 351, you'll need a 351 or 302 spacer plate a six bolt bell housing for a later C4 and your flex plate, & torque converter, and you should be in business.

Hi. I once replaced a 302 in a 73 Mustang FB with a 351W but had trouble because the spacer plate between the bellhousing & the engine were not the same as well as the flywheel or ring-gear being different sizes. The starter location holes run through the plate and these holes on the 351W plate did not line up with the starter holes on the C4 bellhousing, and the ring-gear was clearly too large. I had to either use the 302 plate and
ringear or use a C6 or FMX trans. I don't recall which I ended up doing. So pay atention to these items if you make a swap.

|woodz428||I agree and if your getting a later trans look for a C4 from a 302 Mustang II, they have a much smaller bellhousing and take up a lot less room in a tight compartment.|

|jprowse00||yep , bolt pattern 's a problem , way i see it , if you'v got to get a bellhousing , and trade the valve body , you likely are better off starting with a later 70's trans .. lots of them around , and you don't have a miss-mash of parts when you'r done ..you'l want to o-haul /resaeal either one .. my vote is a later model .. best of luck .jim prowse .|

It'll be a good tranny for a hot rod and with a shift kit/ good rebuild kit it'll handle around 400hp. The tranny in its natural form right now will not work with a 351. Before 1965 they had 5 bolt bellhousings, after that they switched to 6 bolt bellhousings. Just get one off a c4 that was mounted to any kind of ford small block or cleveland after 1966 and then it'll bolt up to a 351.
Oh, about the shift kit, a lot of manufacturers don't make shift kits for c4s before 1967. THis is because the 64-66 valve bodies are pretty primitive compared to the later ones. But, you can get a 67 or later valve body and bolt it in your c4. Just take note of what year it is from because there is some differences in years.

Will a c-4 trans from a 64 fairlane with the 260 v/8 be a good trans to hot rod, and will it work with a 351 windsor?
