sore tooth

I'am changing rear ends in my 40 ford, the one thats in it now is a 61 to 63 GM front load
hog head,3.36 gear.while I was inspecting it I
found a broken tooth on the ring gear,I would like to put a newer GM back under it.
Any one out there know what will fit,The one thats undre is 60 7/8in from axle flang to axle flang. By the way its about 1 1/2 to long

I do not know of any but I am sure that there is one on GM rear ends. 1964 was the last year for removable center sections for GM passenger vechicles. This makes GM rear ends less desirable to most rodders, me included.

A lot of rodders use the Ford 9" and redrill the wheel pattern on the axles to 4.75 so they can still use the wheels they have.

IF you wish to keep a old style GM rear end like you have, I believe that a 64 Chevy II (with V8) has the most narrow one of that kind.

In your first post you stated that you found a broken tooth on the ring/pinion. This leads me to believe that you have the center section out.....just count the teeth on the small gear(pinion) and count the teeth on the large gear (ring). Divide the large number by the small number and you will have the ratio.

32 / 9 = 3.55
37/10 = 3.70
37 / 11 = 3.36

You get the idea...... :D :D

I also have a 40 Ford business coupe, in addition to the Black Roadster in the photo. A 1957 Ford car rear end fits great with no cutting. Gear sets from 2.50 to 6.50 are available. A 3.25 or 3.50 would be comparable to the 3.36 you currently are using. The 57 rear end is 57 and a fuzz inches wide (measured qhere the rims bolt up).

You might also try the 8 inch ford rear end axle assembly. They are a differential drop out type and very simular to the 9 inch in design, just a little smaller. They are quite common, found in Ford Granada's, and Mavericks. They will handle up to about 300 horsepower. Nice rear ends for street rods. I buy them all the time for $100.00 to $200.00. Good Luck on your project!

Check out the 74-81 1/2 ton Trucks for a solid 12 bolt. My 75 Chevy is around 60" flange to flange. Stick with the 5 lug to keep the wheels appropriate...

Also, check out 70-mid90s Impala/Caprice cars. These are around 58 - 60 inches.

I had been looking for a rearend for my Austin Healey at 44" flange to flange and realized even the Granada/Versailles/Maverick rears are 52"...
I'm cutting down a Mopar 9 1/4. (The 44" is to match the front track... if I push it, I could go 40" but have to watch tire diameters or tub it instead of doing flares...)
