IanRiordan Not just well plugs, a blocked charcoal cannister and a hot evening will give the same result.

good carbs flow well and easy tune. Had same problem , park truck 1 day
had to prime carb to start or kill battery. Retarded timing 3 degrease truck started but took a while. I was at a red light 1 day a guy on the side walk walked over and said " black smoke, do you smell gas? I do from the side walk, check your well plug and walked away."

chev38 Something else to check is the floats. GM used a material that would soak up gas and sink, releasing all the gas you cared to put to it. If it has black floats, replace then with an aftermarket float. They are great carbs but do have a few 'engineering/finance department' problems.

Every Q-Jet I have torn apart with your problem has been leaking at the well plug, if carb cleaner washed out what the other guy put in then he put in the wrong stuff or didn't clean it and let it dry properly. J-B Weld works darn good but the carb body has to be CLEAN and DRY. Good luck and I'll take you up on that if you decide not to fix it. As far as the fuel coming out elsewhere that is probably a direct result of the well plug problem.

The guy I bought the truck from evidently used sompthin to seal it up (wherever it was leaking from) I soaked it in carb dip, and put in a rebuild kit. (I shouldn't have) Ever since that, I could strain spagetti through it. The float bowl can't keep up with the the out flow I spose if I could tell exactly where the leak was; it could be sealed; but it seems like it's coming from everywhere! "Dredded" Q-Jet?! Q-Jets are the next best thing to EFI in my book. Tell you what, throw that POS in a box and send it my way, I'll even pay the freight.

Seriously, I've never seen a Q-Jet crack. However they will leak around the well plug and soak the intake runners causing the problem it sounds like you are having but a good cleaning and a little J-B Weld around the plug will cure that. I'd patch up the Q-Jet then put the 3310 on eBay or at the very least give the QJ to whoever buys the truck, but do NOT throw it away.

My biggest interest is getting rid of the Chev at minimal out of pocket costs; and raisin funds for my Lil 65' Mopar project.

ragenrat638 hey buddy....the picture posted is a squrebore carb... your rochester is a spreadbore...
so you will need a adaptor...very easy to get...or change the intake to squrebore...for correct fit.....that carb...might be a little big...so a stock engine.....but vacuum secondarys will help....it should run better....might get some black smoke.....this will be a good test....let us know how it goes...

Rochester to Holley

I have a 72 Chevy C-20 with a stock 350. After having consistant problems with the Rochester Q-jet; I was lucky enough to come across a Holley 3310 at the right price. (like free) It was in a bucket in a storage shed that my buddy was cleaning out on a forclosure house. He knew of my frustrating experience with the dredded Q-jet and dropped the Holley off one day. This thing is pretty darn clean! Anyway, I figured I'd go ahead and just pick up a rebuild kit for it; and slap it on the Ol' 72'.
So here is my question: Will I be needing any special adapters to make the switch from the Q to the H ? I'm relatively sure that it's a common switch. Thanks in advance.
