I got a 200R4 from a 84 Grand National and I was wondering if it was any good for a 350 cu in. I don't see any one talking about them. It's going in a 66 Chev truck. Honest opinions would be helpful. Thanks

The 2004R trans is a good trans when set up correctly. Its brother the 700R4 gets more attention, but the 200 has a better gear ratio spread. I usually use one for NON-drag race, street use. Tho with a different input/drum/servo and some other expensive pieces it will live under drag racing conditions. Look at some of the GN Buicks that drag race with the 2004R. I have a friend that uses them in his Hot small block S-truck Drag vehicle exclusively. It has the multi pattern belhousing and is capable of good service..

I Don't Even Like Automatics But I Like The 2004R. This Tranny (And The 700R4) Are Very Capable. Any Automatic Needs To Be Set Up Right For The Purpose. I Like The More Even Gear Spread Of The 2004R-Less RPM Dropoff. The 700R4 Has A Lower 1st And 2nd Which Some People Find Advantageous. They Pay The Price At The 2nd To Third Shift. Hook Up With Art Carr Performance Transmissions On The 2004R. Interesting Note- The 2004R Fits In Place Of The 6"Tailshaft TH350. The 700R4 Fits In Place Of The 9"Tailshaft TH350. Same Driveshafts-Different Mounts Locations, Cooling Lines, Dipsticks, And Yes The TV Cable Is CRITICAL! Built Right They Both Will Get It Done. Just The Same I'll Go On Driving Ol' Three Pedal! MD

you got to watch the weight of the vehicle for a 200-4r application.

I built a 200-4r for a friend with a 52 chev convert with 292 inline 6 for power. His original 200 shreaded it's self.

So far ( cross fingers) mine has run across the USA twice with only a needed TV cable adjustment I did at Speed Week while at bonneville salt flats last year.

2004r

before I restored my 87 monte it had 177,000 miles on numbers matching engine and tranny, the tranny was a 2004r, as long as you dont beat it to death with over 350hp you should be fine, the only part that is REALLY bad on them is the input shaft and there is a man near me who sells the only "unbreakable shaft".
the ratio is great for the highway I think it is a .67 as opposed to the 7004r's .70 bit th e7004r has a better first gear.
2004r is a great STREET tranny!

i have ran 200's since 90 in all the cars i build. only one failure due to racing abuse. it's a far better box than the 700 and is a true 4 speed. it has a clucth pack for 4th. not a band. jmo
