Make sure that you have a good engine ground clean and tight!

94 Malibu starting problem

My son has a 95 Malibu automatic v-6 and when you start it and drive and then stop it some times not all the time it will not start back up. The engine turns over just fine and the longer you try to start it the longer it will take to start. On the other hand if you go shopping for a while and then come back to the car it will start right up again. It's got me scratching my head with this problem because I'm not sure where to look for the problem and the engine runs smooth and good.One would think if was in the ignition system I would have a miss or it would be there all the time but now I'm also dealing with a computer so I thought someone out there might have run across this problem before and save me some time on what to look for or just take a stab at what you would do two heads are better then one,,thanks,,Joe

ignition problem

hi everybody,maybe someone can help me with this.i have 75 gmc pickup that won't start.cranks over but won't start.if i run a power wire from the battery to the distributor cap terminal,truck fires right up.have changed ignition switch and checked wire to fuse block and tried changing fuses,no luck.i'm overlooking something but not sure what.any help would be appreciated.thanks,i hope i put this post in right place

chileelky Hi Doc, me again:

the car is running normal, no blown fuses, no melt cables so far. At daylight, kind of power cut off for a moment when footed, normal when revving slow. No problem at nigh-time (headlights on).
Installed a resistor but I think I got a wrong one (rated 1,6 ohms), the car didn't start, took it off.

That would be on the secondary side of the coil..not too much to worry about there if you have 8 MM spiral core wires and proper gapped plugs (around 45)

The primary is the side pulling around 20 amps..The + side..It may not be compatible with your Ignition module I really couldn't say for sure..you need to check the instruction sheets for both units for compatibility.

A ballast resistor may not be required for that coil either, another thing to check on your data sheets, It could just make it run worse..At the very least, It will defeat the purpose of why you put the upgraded coil on there to begin with.

I am very amateur, but surfing through the posts (lots of yours) have helped me a lot (not too many info sources here en Chile).

If I get it right, that combination will make 20 amp on the spark plug wires, with risk of freeing them. Will a ballast resistor cure this?

I took the car for a 15 min ride, after installing an MSD 5900, the Flame thrower II coil, the Taylor SST wires (Ignitor I was installed before) and runs great.....so far.

By the way, I installed all this trying to low HC omissions to pass next control, so any help on how to kill HC will be greatly appreciate also.

Not sure I know what your asking..

But if referring to the primary side of the coil it will be 20 amps..12v divided by 0.6=20...

If thats the case, most stock ignitions are designed for about 10 amps..the wire gauge will be undersized and could cause a meltdown in the harness or fire, and if fused it will keep blowing fuses..

I make a mistake. Bought a Flamethrower II coil having an original Ignitor. There is a warning on the coil not to use together (because the final ignition amp will be too high?

What will be the max amp recommended (69 gm 307, taylor braided wires, approx 12 volts on the coil + when running, coil 0,600 ohms)?

What damage may occur if used?

Appreciate your help.

Here is the Diagram for 71 - 78 With Electronic Ignition,

The V8 is on the right side, The Brown from the Dizzy and the Green /white from the Dizzy go to the module brown and green /white wires .. as do the pink (duel Ballast resistor) and black yellow (module), from the coil

Sorry for the crappy drawing..

Disregard the left side of the photo, It's V6.



Maybe this is a bit better I redrew it in PSP....It's still hard to read..

Neophyte I have a 91 SBC 350 TBI with small square coil just outside the dizzy. Trying to start I have no spark. The coil has 4 wires on 2 plugs: plug 1 - Pink for power, white for tacho. Plug 2 - red wire and white wire (if I remember right). How can I check if the coil or the dizzy module is faulty? PLEASE HELP!

use a gm 1 wire alternater 1 wire go,s from the battery to the alternater thats it
