Rat rods like rat bikes are a modern thing as for as I can tell. I think they are trying to get the look of everyday transportation of the era not that of the genuine hot rod. The hot rodder wanted to draw attention to his ride, so he could show off his skills.

bigun It is amazing when you think about the fact these were the top of the line with the latest tech for the era, and how crude they look to todays Top Fuel vehicles.

malc Since I started reading Hot Rod, in ī65 I have followed Garlits.
I got some books about him and videos about him and the museum.
Definately a great innovator and once being the underdog and getting to the top didīnt hurt.
Hereīmy Swamp Rat 1B, SR1 with blower added.
Also a Kalitta dragster, The Bounty Hunter, not sure which one first second or what.

bigun Thanks Malc I followed Don's career starting with a write up in dad's Popular Mechanics magazine he had just been involved in a blower explosion/car fire and survived with minor burns because Pat had bought him a leather jacket to wear over his standard white T-shirt. Then when I discovered car magazines he was always the man to me.

as it first appeared, later it got the aluminum scoop and the yellow paint.
