I see, sounds like a good enough reason. My pan has seen its better days but is still solid. Its steel and painted the same color as the rest of the motor. Rust isn't as bad here in Florida, but I have to drop the cradle and back half of the suspension to change the oil pan. Not something I would want to do too often.

swvalcon I've never used one that didn't leak unless i ground the crap out of the gasket area to get the chrome off it so it would seal

Really why is that? I was looking at one today and was thinking how good it would look on my car.

swvalcon The chrome covers arent to bad but if your using a chrome pan throw it away.

Jake_Dragon How about those one piece oil pan gaskets, I was in a hurry and bought the multiple part gasket but if I ever do it again I will be using the one piece.
Is it a chrome timing chain cover? Try taking some sanding paper and remove the chrome from the gasket surface.

PatM The thick seal is the later edition. If you are using the old pan, you may be stuck with on old style (thin seal) pan and may have been using a new (thick seal) gasket. Bring the front seal segment of the gasket set that leaks down to your local parts supplier. The difference in seal thickness between the front pan radius and the bottom T/C cover radius is on the order of .12-.25 (that is the difference, not the thickness). Whichever seal you have, try a pan gasket set with the other one. Good Luck.

BOBCRMAN@aol.com Sounds like you need the oil pan gasket with thick front seal. Many years ago I built a SBC and had to finish job on a deadline. Grabbed the wrong pan and had the same problem. AND I KNOW BETTER! just in a hurry...

poncho62 There are 2 sizes of front rubber seals that are used on Chevy pans..........a thin on and a thick one. Chances are you need the thick one. Also, a dab of silicone sealer in the corners doesn't hurt.

can the wrong oil pan make this sbc leak?

on a sbc, I have an oil leak where the pan meets the timing chain cover. new gaskets didn't fix the problem, so I'm thinking maybe the pan is the problem. I do not know what year the block is (can't find any numbers and the pad has been milled) other than the dipstick is on the passenger side. this was a crate engine and I used the oil pan off the old engine. how do I tell if I need the pan with a one piece seal, or does it matter? could the wrong oil pan be why this thing wont stop leaking oil? oh yeah, the timing chain cover is new too; all bolts are tight.
