A 700R4 can handle the HP if it is built for that purpose. A box stock one will probably not last long. If you go to Bowtie Overdrives web site they have 700R4's built for a specific HP range.

Turbo 400 or 700R4?
My 72 Nova engine is about done. It's about a 600 HP BB Chevy street car. Nothing fancy, just bored .060 over, 10.5:1 compression, big cam, dual plane intake, headers, ported heads, roller rockers, etc. This is NOT a drag racing car. It has a stock TH-350 3-speed in it. It has an aftermarket posi differential. It mostly likely has a stock 10 bolt (not sure which one) approximately 3.0 gear and a stock torque converter. Now that the engine work is done - I need to plan the drivetrain upgrade. The chassis and rear suspension is stock. I ran this car last year with a 500 HP motor and despite the stock drivetrain and high rear gear it really ran good throughout the entire rpm range. I still only got 4-6 MPG. I do however want a different transmission because my engine guy told me a TH-350 will eventually destroy itself with 600 HP in front of it. What should I do. If I stick with an auto trans - which should I go with. Also, what other modifications would be required? driveshaft, trans cross member? pinion/yoke? What would I expect to pay for all this if I bought the parts and did it myself? Can I keep the stock axles and housing or does that have to get replaced also? someone told me that if I have the 11/16" ring gear bolt heads that I have a strong 10-bolt. Is that true? Oh, one more thing. I can probably be talked into putting in a 4-speed manual. thanks.
