Jeez That Was Close

Got to thinking about the CD player, so had to check. The breaker for that circuit was tripped. When I reset it, a little wisp of smoke and pop goes the circuit. A piece of steel had pinched the power cord on the side of the table and down on the leg there is a burn on the wire where it was shorting to the leg. Evidently made my own low grade electromagnet. Fortunatly I never got myself included in the circuit. Now all I got to do is figure out how to demagnetize everything.

61bone I actually hadn't done any welding when it happened, but I was using the MIG a couple days before. It doesn't have enough lead to wrap around the table. What I was doing, is cutting some 1" plate with the plasma cutter. Had it cranked to the max of 65a. I would normally use a torch for this, but didn't want to harden the steel because I was going to turn the cuttings.
UPDATE:The magnetisim seems to have left the table, but the hammer and punches will still stick on the wall. Makes it easy to store them, but they look like they haven't shaved for a week. Also, the CD player quit working.

oldred Getting the cables looped around your work can sometimes play havoc with arc control due to electro magnetism.

Back to the program.....

What typ of welding???? stick????

When i worked in the weld shop guys would bring me files and screwdrivers to magnetize ( they used them to get chips out of holes on the assembly floor). I would rap the tool with a heavy wire and hook the ground to one end of the wire and the stinger to the other, set the welder to 100 amps DC/SP. hit it twice for about 5 seconds,,,,,, and BAM it was a magnate!!!!!!

It must be very dry there and the use of electrical equipment would definitely charge nearby metal objects. I would try hitting the bench with a heavy hammer which should discharge the juice. But first try putting a cat on the bench for an interesting pic. Speaking of metal benches does anyone have the plans for a good one, say about 3 feet by 5 or 6 feet.,,, thx fast ed

powerrodsmike [QUOTE=Rob Keller]I want what YOUR smoking

It should be YOU'RE. Like as in "you are", with an apostrophe in the place of the "a". "I want what you are smoking" . Sorry ,I couldn't resist. The smoke 's all gone. All I have left from those days is scorched lungs and some old Cheech and Chong records. I have always been easily amused. Momma said I was special. One time I had my wallet in my front pocket and BOTH welding leads were laying across my lap while I was welding. I had to get every atm and credit card that was in my pocket replaced. Come to think of it, my kids are kind of funny looking too. If you want to see some neat patterns take that old speaker magnet and rub it around on your TV screen. It will mess up the TV beyond repair but it sure makes some cool patterns before the screen goes away. Makes trails too. I think oldred pegged it with the wrapped lead thing. I gotta go fix my tinfoil pyramid hat now.

73oldsman It's due to the hydomagnetic electrical impulses randomly transmitted and cross-transmitted through the pulse electrical energy emitted from the negative electrons colliding with the positive electrons in your welding cable, or something like that so I've been told. And yes, the '60's were good for me.

definitely see how your leads are around the table you should try using a old speaker magnet and rub it on the table to reduce the magnetism built up in the table I dunno this is a new one to me

see if this helps I couldn't get a short cut to the page sorry

oldred 61, do you have your welding cable around the bench?
01-08-2006 08:29 PM
46chevyfleetline Don't sit your butt on it with your wallet in your back pocket or you'll be replacing your debit and credit cards cause you just messed up the magnetic strip. Cheers!!!!
